Lane is great. She doesn't participate in the central premise of the show, because she has her own wants, needs, desires, and life, too. Sometimes very separate from Rory. She's just also a good friend to Rory. |
Oh I love Babette! I guess that makes sense as a middle aged weirdo myself, married to another weirdo, with a bunch of pets and no kids. Hm. |
To me the show ruined Rory with the cheating storyline, her not remembering her boyfriend's name, her aimlessness...A big part of the show was to take us on a growth journey with this immature kooky teen mom raising an awesome, nice, grounded kid, and she turned out opposite. It made it all sad to me in retrospect. |
Her whole storyline went off track when Adam Brody got cast on the OC and she lost Dave. They failed her miserably after that. |
I am still mad about this. Why did that automatically mean she had to have this shitty awful life? There was no rush and they blew it. This show really suffered from lack of good large plotting and too much focus on chatty quick dialogue. |
It was bad enough that she was the OW with Dean. Then in HER THIRITES she still thinks cheating is cool? She's the worst. There is no contest. |
Oh, I'm with you. Also, Rory deserved Logan. I actually kinda liked Logan. Dean sucked. |
Yep. I'm on Season 1 with my daughter. It's been such a pleasure to rewatch it. I've kind of been letting myself forget that it really self-destructs, esp. with how Rory turns out. Lane was my favorite throughout! |

Agreed. I feel like they went out of their way to make Lane's life terrible because they wanted to highlight the differences between Lane's trajectory and Rory's. Like Lane has the public school/townie life, and since the Sherman-Palladinos are insufferable snobs, this means she has to become a mom in her early 20s and get trapped in a marriage to a mediocre man and have no career? What? Lane was smart and interesting and she was an obvious candidate to be a great late bloomer once she finally got some freedom and distance from her mom and had a chance to make her own choices. And the whole storyline is just meant to highlight how many more opportunities and experiences Rory has, with her private school background and wealthy grandparents. And the show seems to take this bizarre attitude that this is just how it is and also probably how it should be because Rory is supposed to be "the smart one." But... Lane is also smart. And also often more level-headed and mature than Rory. There is absolutely no reason that Lane was destined to this crappy little life in her hometown while Rory traveled the world and had a big career. IRL I think someone like Lane would have had a much more interesting and successful life. |
+1. I watched it with my teen DD and we loved the first few seasons. You nailed it about the joy of watching the kooky teen mom successfully raise this great kid in a sweet village of adults who cared about this girl. When Rory went off the rails and that carried on in the revival it was so sad. It sparked a lot of conversations about her bad choices academically, behaviorally and romantically. |
+1 Rory in the reboot was so awful. |
TIL Kirk is... handsome? |

It's completely unrealistic. |
