But Lane participates in the central premise of the show, which is that Rory is somehow special and deserving of unique attention and support. Both Lane and Suki seem like they could be good characters, and yet the exist primarily to enable all of Lorelai and Rory's horribleness, so I can't get behind them.

No, I want her to be as old as possible when she watches it, so she can take SO MUCH of it with the good and bad. It cannot be universally loved and adored. It has to be loved and hated.

I think your approach is all wrong.
The way for you to make sure it’s loved AND hated by your 12 yo DD is to let her watch it now and love it! And then make her watch it again when she’s 25 and HATE it!
