Too thin? At what point to friends intervene. Nicole Kidman allegedly is “too thin “

Anonymous
You know who's starving? The author of this hack piece, for a good copy editor.

Scrawny Nicole Kidman's wraithlike appearance reportedly has friends concerned for the Oscar-winning actress whose down to a shocking 105 pounds, RadarOnline.com has learned.

They can't discern any more what's a healthy weight, since nowadays healthy is not what you normally see! Norm does not equal health.

So then they look at a healthy person, and freak out that they're too thin.

It becomes a vicious circle, because people will more easily slide into the overweight category, thinking that overweight is healthy because it's the norm.

Mind-boggling.

Nicole Kidman has a BMI in the range of normal.

Do you?

lol, have you spent any time in LA or NYC? Ever met an actress?

I was always thinner than my sister but in her 40s she suddenly got horrific gut problems, after a bad infection (hospitalized), that have left her totally unable to eat gluten and dairy. So now she's way thinner than I am. She basically has to eat a crazy healthy diet of lean proteins and vegetables, or she's disabled (she was out of work for a year before the doctors came up with this plan for her). That's an extreme example, but I know a lot of women with some variation of this. Almost all the middle aged women I know that are extremely thin have some sort of stomach/gut issue that is leading to restricted eating. Of course, I'm sure some of the stars do it because of social pressure, but I think the medical stuff is under-recognized.

Do you think this is what’s happened to Nichole?

I'm not saying anything that extreme (but who knows -- people aren't really public about having things like explosive diarrhea), but I would bet she has at least some gut issues. She's also Irish extraction and gluten intolerance is super common among the Irish -- its a genetic thing, like alcohol intolerance in certain Asians. And once you can't eat gluten, it's almost hard to keep on weight unless you're eating fried potatoes or white rice all day. Most of the easy calorie food has gluten.

I have another friend whose friends staged in intervention for her -- they would go out after work all the time to bars and she never ate anything really, and they all thought she was anorexic. She had horrible IBS and greasy bar food gave her explosive diarrhea/farts. She didn't really advertise that, and would just go to be social, and have a drink. She was very thin, but was normal weight before the medical issues started in her 30s.

So whenever I hear people judging these middle aged women who are very thin, I think that a medical issue is more likely than an eating disorder.

Context is everything.

I’ve been spending a lot of time recently watching films from my YouTubeTV library, all recorded from TCM - I love old movies and I hate advertising, so it’s my favorite channel.

Having spent so much time the last month or so watching movies from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s - no, Kidman is not too thin. She looks normal in the context of how women used to look.

70% of Americans are overweight or obese. In that context Kidman looks thin, thinner than most of the women we see in our own social circles and communities and even in media given recent shifting norms.

This. I've never been underweight in my life. Yet people have approached me with their "concerns." Spare me. People no longer have any concept of what a healthy frame looks like because "healthy" is now synonymous with being overweight.

Don't stage an intervention with your thin friends, ok? You wouldn't have an intervention with your obese friends, who have a much more pressing health issue.

Aging is not for the faint of heart.

I think the exact opposite- especially as people are aging.

Agree. On a 25 year old, very thin looks better than even slightly overweight, but not true once you are over 45 or so.

I disagree. I have met a lot of women over 45 who are very thin and I think it looks good on them. Also for a lot of people, it's not possible to just put on 5-10 pounds. Many people are kind of programmed for thinness and the only way they are gaining weight is through unhealthy eating and putting on a lot of weight. Trust me, it would not improve their appearance.

I think it depends on how much facial fat disappears with age. During covid, I noticed that many thinner women I know look better over Zoom, as the camera adds a little more fullness to the face. I'm not sure one would have to go as far as being slightly overweight to see some benefits... maybe being a size 4 is better than being a size 0 though.

I think her friends should intervene about the plastic surgery and/or cosmetic procedures she's having done.

It says her weight is 105. Her height is 5’11 according to at least a few posters here. That is a BMI of 14.6, which is nowhere near normal.

Idiot.

I feel seen!!! And for the record I do eat white rice with nearly every meal (plus lean protein).

She’s been getting thinner and thinner in recent years. It’s not normal. Or healthy.

At this point, she is clearly underweight. She’s not a petite lady like Kelly Ripa—she’s a tall woman built like a model, yet now she looks like a bobble head.

The pic in the tie-dye shirt makes clear that she’s too thin.

I’ve been thin my whole life. I’ve had people, including one doctor who I never went to again, question me if I’m anorexic. It’s insulting and if they saw what I eat, they’d be shocked.

Nicole is fine!

She looks anorexic in that picture.

Thin-shaming.

She's much healthier than overweight people.

I am not overweight. She looks unhealthy. Stringy. Wasted.
