What kind of school is heat and how do his grades generally match up/rank

Excellent public. Rigor is good, not great. Grades are good, not great. Setting aside fit, trying to understand what is realistic.

Fit needs your full attention.

+1

Why isn't fit the priority?

Consider Denison.

Nope.

Too optimistic even with great recs and essays?

Yeah. Not going to happen. Just went through process with a FP boy with similar stats. Midd (for example) is attainable from our hs for kids with virtually perfect scores and grades applying ED. This is a totally wishful list.

Depends on your school and how colleges think about it. At ours, Midd would be in reach for a kid w a 3.6. Bates would be target

This is a public high school?

It’s of course a priority but I think it’s logical to begin with an understanding of what’s possible. Why waste time determining fit at schools that you can’t get into?

Based on our experience with higher rigor and great ECs, leadership, and academic awards from a top private, yes.

What private gives out academic awards? My experience is that the top
privates do not until graduation.

National, also school awards, but those were at graduation.

Denison has a PPE major - Philosophy,Poly Sci, and Economics that might be of interest.

+1 on considering places with a PPE or Political Economy interdisciplinary major:

When did you graduate college or when did your last kid graduate college as this suggestion seems woefully out of touch?

This is a great major. I wanted to do it myself but ended up at a school that didn’t offer it (but was able to cobble it together more or less). It’s a nice way to blend Econ into the mix for practical purposes without wasting too much of your college career on boring econ.

He has a chance at Good but not great Colleges.

Ouch, but yes.

Last cycle — class of 2027. Appreciate your kindness.

It just doesn't jive. OP's son is a middle-of-the-road candidate at a public school--there are hundreds of thousands of students with better stats than he has. These schools you list have a few thousand spots total. Why would they take OP's kid? Honest question.

I think OP is facing the harsh disconnect between what he wants for his kid and what his kid can realistically aspire to.
Many parents are in this boat.

The above is a list of colleges (most are SLACs) where being male boosts your chances, OP. Might want to check them out and see if any are of interest to your son.

It's not being kind to mislead OP, even if unintentional or based on faulty info. Your suggestion that many of those schools would be great ED candidates are not realistic, not at all. Maybe Bates, maybe Pitzer, but the rest of the list seem truly off base. Our DCs are HS '21 and '22 at a regarded independent and those schools would not work ED for a student with a mix of As/Bs in classes of good, not great, rigor.
