SLAC suggestions for FP male As and Bs, good rigor, 1450-1500

If he wants to head south like so many kids are doing these days, look at Davidson as a reach and Sewanee/Rhodes/Furman as more target/safety type schools.

Apply early to a high target -- if a 3.3 maybe a school like Franklin and Marshall, Dickinson, Denison, Trinity, Conn Coll, if more like a 3.6 maybe chance Bates or Bucknell?

If closer to 3.6 then macalester, bates,

Middlebury and Davidson more of reach
- all of this assuming ED

Davidson, Pitzer, Claremont McKenna, Colby, Bates, Wesleyan or Midd would be great ED candidates. Really spend time on the essays — that will help offset the GPA.

As and Bs in core academic classes with several but not all APs. This is more about what is possible as opposed to fit. We will figure out fit as we go. The idea here is this isn’t a student with 1500+ and straight As in a heavy rigor course load, which seems necessary for top 10, maybe even top 20. He’s just a rung below all that perfection. But still a very strong student of course.

You need to look way below top 20. Aim for 50-115.

Nope.

This sounds right.

Too optimistic even with great recs and essays?

Only as ED1 with strong interest shown; even then possibly WL with a late start offer.

Based on our experience with higher rigor and great ECs, leadership, and academic awards from a top private, yes.

What kind of school is heat and how do his grades generally match up/rank

Excellent public. Rigor is good, not great. Grades are good, not great. Setting aside fit, trying to understand what is realistic.

Fit needs your full attention.

I agree. It is much easier to make a list starting with what you desire in a college (and where kid would be happy) than to start with ranking lists and then figure out where kid would be happy, if he even gets in.
I guess starting from the bottom up rather than the top down. I know this is not how DCUM usually frames the college search, but it worked out well for our kids.

What private gives out academic awards? My experience is that the top
privates do not until graduation.

DP...yes.

Those schools can fill their classes with 3.8+ and 1500+ applicants.

My first inclination when reading the OP was Macalaster, Skidmore, F&M with Vassar as a reach so I am glad to see others with similar suggestions.

NP. The issue is the combination of not-top rigor and GPA. A 3.6 with top rigor would be different. The listed schools aren’t looking for perfection, but they generally want highest rigor.
