Would you be pleased if your child had a 156 IQ?

lol Plenty of high iq kids flunked out of high school

I can’t believe people have children take IQ tests. I also can’t believe so many people believe in IQ tests. They are a cousin of phrenology.

Mine was in the high 160s when I was tested as a child. In general, it does help to be with other people like that -- in school or in work. As I have matured, I have realized that being smart isn't the end all. Helping your kids to value others for other traits is important: religion can help with that. I tend to be anxious, but there might be a lot of reasons for that.

Is there anyone on DCUM who doesn’t think their child is highly gifted?

Not only is everyone in DC above average, everyone is a genius.

Oh come on. You cannot tell me you think that IQ tests are as valid as phrenology. They are massively problematic and often do not test what they are supposed to test but they are still a very good indicator of what we typically call “intelligence.” And that has implications beyond bragging rights or feeling superior or getting into some stupid club.

What do you want me to say? “Oh I’m so humble and down to earth my child is not in fact highly intelligent even though the ADHD evaluation that automatically included IQ testing says she is.”

Donald Trump was really into IQ tests too

IQ doesn't matter. What matters is if they are thriving in their environment, which includes appropriate intellectual stimulation.

Research suggests more IQ is, on average, better in terms of long term career success and achievement. It’s not easy being super rare but the profoundly gifted contribute a lot to humankind.

This would mean that my child's IQ was another half a standard deviation above mine, which would pose particular kinds of challenges and eliminate others.

I would understand that I would likely have particular kinds of work to do as a parent that would be different from what I expect now.

"Pleased" would not be a word that would enter my mind about it. "Displeased" would not either.

It's just a different assignment.

Weird question.

Donald Trump seems like the archetype of someone who takes IQ tests seriously.

Super rare? Nobody even takes IQ tests except average people straining for evidence that they’re special

How about all of these people who claim to know their friends'/family members' IQs?

I've lived in DC for many years and have come across a number of insufferables but no one so crazy as to offer up an IQ score. Just murmerings about how brilliant the child is . . .
