Admittedly, I only listened to that one song, but that's not rock n roll

The National/War on Drugs poster ^^ I also think Greta Van Fleet fits this category.

Manchester Orchestra too. And Death Cab for Cutie.

Whoever said rock is dead was clueless.

totally agree. Rock is far from dead.

But rock had to get close to dying for it to be reborn.

We wouldn't have some of the fantastic bands mentioned if rock hadn't hit its low point about 20 years ago

Surprised nobody has mentioned Cage the Elephant.

Probably not the best, but worthy of discussion.

Also, people need to realize there is a difference between alternative and rock. Some of the groups mentioned arent really rock bands

Goose! They are a young jam band with an indy/funky twist - excellent musicians and they can def. rock!

There isn’t any real difference. Most “alternative” bands are straight forward rock. The alternative label used to be called “modern rock” anyway. 97x “the future of Rock and Roll.” It was only called alternative because it came of age in an era of pop and hip hop dominating Top 40 radio.

Cage the elephant strikes me more as pop. Young the Giant too.

I sort of disagree. I think a band has to be mostly guitar driven to be a rock band.

I love bands like the War on Drugs but I would not call them a rock band. They are adult alternative.

There's def a difference between bands like that, or The National, or Interpol even, which are all great bands, and bands like Cage, The Hold Steady, Black Keys, etc.

The sounds are different enough to label them differently.

For example, this is the top song on Spotify for the National: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-Tod1_tZdU

That's not even remotely close to a rock song

Love spoon and war on drugs
Maggie Roger’s (is she rock?)

Also I really like Peter Gabriel’s new album (he is like 80, but it is good)

Uh, that is a ballad.

Try this:

Or this from one of the albums this year:

Or Day I Die or Smoke Detector from the newest album. Or the System Only Dreams in Total Darkness. Or Don’t Swallow the Cap.

They are 100% a rock band. See Letterman’s appearance last week on the Late Show. He specifically asked for them to be the musical guest.

The War on Drugs is “adult alternative?” Alternative to WHAT?

They’re a rock band. Adam Granduciel is a hell of a guitar player and Charlie Hall on the throne is amazing. Channels Springsteen, Neil Young, The Waterboys….. totally guitar-driven. Listen to Under the Pressure or Harmonia’s Dream…

I loved the Drive-By Truckers. One of my favorite bands ever.

But when Jason Isbell sobered up, he became more country

Which is fine. I listen to him. As well as Colter Wall. And Tyler Childers.

Think there's more creative energy going into alt-country these days than into rock, which is pretty lame these days.
