There isn’t any real difference. Most “alternative” bands are straight forward rock. The alternative label used to be called “modern rock” anyway. 97x “the future of Rock and Roll.” It was only called alternative because it came of age in an era of pop and hip hop dominating Top 40 radio. [/quote]

I sort of disagree.  I think a band has to be mostly guitar driven to be a rock band.

I love bands like the War on Drugs but I would not call them a rock band.  They are adult alternative.

There's def a difference between bands like that, or The National, or Interpol even, which are all great bands, and bands like Cage, The Hold Steady, Black Keys, etc.

The sounds are different enough to label them differently.

They are 100% a rock band. See Letterman’s appearance last week on the Late Show. He specifically asked for them to be the musical guest.[/quote]
