And Phish just copied the Dead... |
I think that some of these would fall into the “indie rock” genre, which is just fine. My opinion is that if it fits on either SiriusXM 35 (XMU) or 36 (Alt Nation), it probably counts as rock.
Newer on the scene is boygenius, even though the individual players have been around a bit. |
boygenius is a super group of successful solo artists including Phoebe Bridgers. They will probably sweep the Grammys. Speaking of the Grammys, War on Drugs literally won “Best Rock Album” a few years ago. Not “best adult alternative” album. Best ROCK album. |
Indie rock is rock. I am not sure why you think it’s a different category? |
1000000000% agree. Most overrated band of all time. They can on,y keep replaying their songs from 1992 today. Good lord gen x, retire rhcp, foo fighters, nirvana already. Rock is dying because all people hear are crap 30+ years old. |
Few will get the Black Sabbath reference. They aren't rock, and aren't American. Van Halen disbanded or they would be the "best" American rock band right now. The criteria is pretty vague. Does best also mean new? |

Sorry Boomer … they are so much better than Phish |
Good grief I can't believe no one has mentioned Hailstorm featuring Lzzy Hale. |
I like Goose a lot and I don't think they're much like Phish. |
Between about 1984 and 1996, it was clearly R.E.M. I honestly don’t think there’s American band close to that now. |
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Blink 182. Maybe because they’re more pop punk than punk rock? But they’ve been putting out hit songs forever. |
They write INCREDIBLY catchy and punchy songs. But there's something about them that just doesn't feel serious. And they are AWFUL live. I think those things keep them out of conversations like this. |
Clearly for that entire time? That's really debatable. |
I think they don’t feel serious because they aren’t. I saw them live and thought they sounded great but they still joke around a lot and make dick and sex jokes like middle school boys. It’s very much their persona. |
