Theft Targets are shutting down

When we looked at the data in detail, shrink wasn't necessarily an issue until the company began aggressively staffing loss prevention in the stores they wanted to close (like 15 to 20 times as much was spent on loss prevention compared to the very small amount spent in stores with cheaper leases). Then, the data existed so they could get out of the leases, close the stores and move their business elsewhere cheaper. Rinse and repeat.

What's interesting is the stores actually made money and were net-net profitable. But the contribution to EBITA didn't support keeping them on the books.

My guess, like most things, is that the money is the reason behind this. Not crime or shoplifting, but obviously focusing on shrink you are going to find it.

I think this is it. Target especially never really had a way to justify paying urban leases when suburban stores where so much more profitable. This is a way to exit markets they already want to leave

They are too emotionally invested in their yard signs and terrified of being called racist if they acknowledge that crime occurs more frequently now than it did a few years ago. I would also point out that if your expectations and tolerances for behavior for the one group of people is different for another group of people - and the defining characteristic of those groups are race - then you are STILL a racist. Because being overly tolerant based on race, is also racism.

If you saw the report on the mentally challenged man who was found in a room in a Metro station, you will see that a fair jumper kept the gate open for the man. It was probably the nicest thing the little s**t ever did.

The city is putting in 8 foot tall fare gates at every station. Fare jumpers will be a thing of the past.

The new fare gates are nowhere near 8 feet and jumping the new ones is a daily occurrence at my metro station.

What's really going on has nothing to do with theft. It's an excuse to hide the truth.

Americans love online shopping! Brick and mortar is dying so they blame theft to close stores.

Yep theft. Notice how.the woke reported the stolen shopping carts left in neighborhoods?

Good for them. When people abuse their privileges, they lose their privileges.

Yeah it's all good until you have to return something. Then stores have issues returning the item or amszon takes a month to refund you.

Its humanly impossible to jump them.

Great, now Tenley Target is probably on the chopping block. Is that why Starbucks also left? Can't imagine how a store on top of metro, next to a HS, and next to a college drop-off bus didn't survive.

The mayor and city council will have to determine if it's a priority to keep stores, to keep sales tax (and residents) in DC.

You don’t need to jump them. You can just push right through them.

Target's in trouble in general. CEO says profits are down since Dec 2021 but if that's the case it just means its resettling back to 2019 income levels right?

I worked evenings at a suburban Target for 5 years to earn extra money when kids were in college. The management was terrible at the store I worked at. The shift leaders & security workers were so afraid of confrontation that they would disappear whenever a customer problem seemed to be developing. I think their entire lives were devoted to not showing up in a viral video confronting anybody who could claim victimhood.

So, people played dodgeball in the aisles, raced bicycles around, cranked up electronics to high levels, brought in their dogs, harassed workers, ate food off the shelf while strolling around, etc.

If they are going down it’s their own fault.

The denial here is amazing

I’m annoyed with Target as they don’t have any Xmas lights left today in my location. Also, they’re not selling any fake trees anymore? No decaf Earl Grey? Nothing that I need/like. Something is wrong here.

Some Targets have always seemed a little “Soviet” to me in this area. It’s always like, oh there’s no carrots this week. None at all. Next week no 2% milk gallons. Next time you go there’s none of the deodorant you usually use. You see the spot on the shelf for it but there’s just none in stock. No size 4 diapers or whatever, never mind the baby formula situation. It’s something I’ve only noticed in this area. When I visit my parents in the Midwest their Targets are large and well stocked.
