Businesses 10 years ago didn't forgo class containers out of the goodness of their hearts. And it's pretty obvious why. People aren't being arrested or prosecuted for petty crime any more. And we're now reaping the rewards. Same with anti social driving behaviors.

You cannot just put a person in jail for taking the things they really need.

Ah yes, the people running out with a cart full of high value deodorant, laundry detergent, etc. are taking the things they really need.

In bulk. To sell at DC’s unregulated street markets. 🙃

The Target shutting down is Spotsylvania County Virginia. Not the border one.

The CVS and Walgreens that are shutting down are the inner city ones where people run out with armfuls of stuff to resell on the street. Haven’t you noticed the stickers on products lately with the store names all over the products? I’ve seen it at CVS and Giant. It’s to let people know that if they buy it off someone on Marketplace or on the street that it was most likely stolen.

They can measure the profitability of every store and it’s never just one thing that leads to a closing. The merchandising mix of a city store needs to be very different than a suburban store. If you get it wrong you have a problem. Is theft a bigger problem in city stores? It is for all retailers. Rent is much higher as well. Bad mix, higher theft and higher rent can swing a store from profit to loss.

But isn’t social justice more important ?

You mean free goods? Maybe.

Ma'am this is a Target.

Why not just close all the city stores?

They are too emotionally invested in their yard signs and terrified of being called racist if they acknowledge that crime occurs more frequently now than it did a few years ago. I would also point out that if your expectations and tolerances for behavior for the one group of people is different for another group of people - and the defining characteristic of those groups are race - then you are STILL a racist. Because being overly tolerant based on race, is also racism.

If you saw the report on the mentally challenged man who was found in a room in a Metro station, you will see that a fair jumper kept the gate open for the man. It was probably the nicest thing the little s**t ever did.

The city is putting in 8 foot tall fare gates at every station. Fare jumpers will be a thing of the past.

All Target needs to do is treat the “customers” with the same approach Metro is taking:

This is the smart approach.

Why don’t they just do what the CVSs in NE do, and replace the goods on the shelf with a photo of the merchandise, then just store all the merchandise safely in the back storeroom.

Then, you can just ask for the item you want, and they bring it out to you.

Problem solved! : - )

+1

This is a good and workable solution being used right now, today, in our area:

Retail theft will kill off what is left of in-person shopping in the US.

But the progressives will label you racist if you support a police-solution to the crime problem.

Don't you need to go say "Just to play Devil's advocate for a minute" somewhere?

Yes, you can and should. There are lots of ways in our society to "get the things they really need," and the first lesson needs to be "you don't get to just take those things from other people." If Mom doesn't teach you that, society needs to. Do you seriously think these bands of teenagers need all of that Tide soap or they will starve?

Target is increasingly overpriced anyway; don’t care if they go out of business.

The Target near me (NYC area) has become progressively stranger in the merchandise they offer. I wanted plain long-sleeved shirts, one in red, one in grey. Not only did they not have any in those colors, there was a total of eight long-sleeved shirts available, all in XS or XXL. I am not talking eight different styles, I am talking eight shirts total. They had dressier shirts, hoodies, short-sleeved shirts, tank tops, and crop tops, though. It's the middle of winter! How can they not have long-sleeved shirts?

Why not just do this?

I stole those picture frames.
