Businesses 10 years ago didn't forgo class containers out of the goodness of their hearts. And it's pretty obvious why. People aren't being arrested or prosecuted for petty crime any more. And we're now reaping the rewards. Same with anti social driving behaviors.

You cannot just put a person in jail for taking the things they really need.

Yes, you can and should. There are lots of ways in our society to "get the things they really need," and the first lesson needs to be "you don't get to just take those things from other people." If Mom doesn't teach you that, society needs to. Do you seriously think these bands of teenagers need all of that Tide soap or they will starve?

Regardless of income, race, living conditions, parents and other caregivers with good values DO teach that honesty is the way to go and stealing is not.

How many days would you put a person in jail for stealing, say, 2 boxes of wine? 10? 20? 365? Guess what- they are homeless and most likely addicted to drugs so jail won't be solving anything. It's not that their mom didn't teach them not to steal, it's probably more likely that she was also in the same position and the vicious cycle of poverty/substance abuse continued.

Shouldn't this be the bare minimum of parenting? I mean, we all work, but all kids are not running roughshod taking whatever they please from other humans and businesses.

Social justice warriors and progressives are actively promoting removing any consequences for stealing and many other sorts of wrong-doing.

A society without consequences or order will bring out the worst in people, despite many caregivers or parents promoting good values.
