I'm tired of the complaint threads about crime in DC. Let's take action!

Good thing our local government that can barely manage garbage collection is focused on a Gaza-Israel statement instead of skyrocketing crime.

Is the beating part necessary? Like, it's just gratuitous at this point.

Aren't we going to ask why she was alone outside at night?

Yes, cue the blamers. But I really would like it if women (and men) could feel safe outside. Like in other world capitals? Yes, many have a few rougher neighborhoods, but I've lived in a lot of world capitals where I could walk your run of the mill neighborhoods, even at night

Compiling the suggestions so far--

Wear a hat to protest crime day -- what day? Is there a day of anything coming up that would coincide thematically?

Embarrass the politicians into doing something. Won’t solve all the problems but it is a start.

The private security idea is probably the one that’s the most viable. Unfortunately, people would probably be reticent to do it because the pro-crime faction and their media enablers would label them as racist.

Hmm, I am just trying to imagine how to do it. Like literally rent a cop? Just go to a private security firm and give them a beat to walk in shifts? Neighborhood passes a hat? I am not anti-police, but yes, it would make headlines if we have to hire people to do what police are meant to do but can't or won't do the lack of political support.

^ recommends cameras and a link to forming neighborhood watch. I'm searching for private security, how that would work.

^ Sorry that was a dead link. I was feeling sad that even neighborhood watch has given up--but this site appears live:

My parents’ neighborhood in a large city does this. A retired man was beaten and robbed while walking his dog. He ended up in a coma at a local hospital with no ID and no phone, which led to one person spearheading the effort.

Two rent-a-cops drive patrol cars in the neighborhood. It’s fairly cheap for the year and everyone who participates has a small sign outside their door similar to if you use a home security system.

I have no idea how this can possibly be seen as racist. (No idea if it’s actually effective either, but I think it’s $100 every six months to participate and the price goes down as more neighbors join in.)

Yes, you’ve organized. But now you’re scared because the other 98% of the population is starting to wake up to the consequences of your movement.

In the interim, a younger, smarter, and more proactive DC version of Curtis Sliwa and his mighty band.

November 8th is "World Urbanism Day". Should that be the day for wearing something to protest the crime spike? Coming soon...

https://www.nationaldaycalendar.com/national-day/world-urbanism-day-november-8

WORLD URBANISM DAY
[b]"On November 8th, World Urbanism Day recognizes and promotes the role of planning and creating livable communities. The day is also known as World Town Planning Day.

The word urbanism describes how inhabitants of urban areas interact with the built environment. Urban areas are towns, cities, and other places with higher populations. The primary focus of urban planning is to make the community healthy and livable for its inhabitants. Urban planning also ensures orderly development.

Red hat day sounds like a simple way to bring attention to this issue.

I am thinking about this. Is there a mechanism to declare neighborhoods private with a guard house at the entry? I'm being serious. if there isn't there isn't, and default to neighborhood watch and the reach out you mention?

Entry to neighborhoods? Tell us you don't live here without telling us you don't live here.

NP, but I remember when crime in Trinidad was so bad that there were police checking IDs at the few entrance points in the neighborhood.

Streets are in a grid. What are "entrance points" that would stop everyone from getting there? These aren't planned neighborhoods with one road in and out.
