Homecoming dresses are so short!

But if you point this out, you are slut shaming them and also you should be body positive. Oh and also if a boy glances at their butt cheeks or boobs or notices when their crotch is on fully display, he is the problem and not the girl and it is their right to have their ass or boobs hanging out and the boys should all be better humans and not ever look or comment. This mindset totally works and all the boys handle this great because 16 and 17 year olds are super mature and have no raging hormones or lack of good judgment in groups.

It is the greatest that this is what our daughters want to wear and don't have a single opinion OP. And yep, I have a teen daughter.

Glance = ok. More than that and, yes, that's their problem.
Yes, girls have the absolute right to wear whatever they want and yes boys should learn to control themselves.
Making them 16/17 does not change this analysis.

Glad we're on the same page.

I make DD wear biker shorts underneath her dress, and it must come down a couple of inches below her bottom. Some of the dresses I've seen hit right below the butt cheeks. Some girls wear tube tops to school, and shorts that show the bottom of the butt cheeks.

How on earth is that appropriate attire for school?
I don't think it's appropriate, but I also don't think it's appropriate to refer to other women/girls as streetwalkers. Do you teach your HS sophomore to refer to the ones you don't approve of like that?

If those girls were walking out on a street late at night looking like that, people would assume that they are street walkers. Just because they are in a HS gym doesn't make them not look like street walkers.

I teach my HSer to respect her body and to not fall victim to what's trendy with the "popular" girls.

+1
It’s beyond me how people think the expectation that only girls show their bodies is somehow liberating.

+1 IMO, it's sexualizing and objectifying girls even more.

-parent of teen DD and teen DS, and I'm somewhat of a feminist.

Those girls have zero respect for their own bodies. People have eyes. H3ll, even a woman/girl would notice your butt cheeks hanging out.

So if teen boys accidentally stare, is that frowned upon? Or are their owns only allowed to look from the neck up?

No. Leering and catcalling, yes. Your boys aren't animals. Teach them to control themselves beyond the initial look.

See it didn't take long. This pretzel like logic of the girls are half naked but they are liberated and having a really great time and doing this because they just love it and love their bodies! Yay girls! And the boys are animals if they notice cleavage and ass cheeks.

Make it make sense.

I thought schools have dress codes. Or did that go away?

I am not understanding how it's okay to show off have your belly and your part of your a$$, and have it not be a violation of any dress codes for school (assuming there is still one).

IMO, it's because most of the girls who dress this way in our HS are a particular skin color, and the admin don't want to be seen as racist.

Not at our school. It is equal across races.

Girls on the other hand are encouraged to show as much skin as possible. Why the double standard? Equality will come when girls don’t feel the need to “bare it all” just like the boys.

There is no dress code for boys either. Anything goes. Boys are free to wear dresses or crop tops or whatever and some do.

There is no dress code at our MCPS HS. That ended with MS.

Sexism and slut shaming isn't cute, either. But you seem to have that down pat, anyway.

Call me what you want, but I'd rather be "sexist" than have my DD look like a prostitute. And don't think I'm the only one who's thinking that.

Also, I didn't call them a slut. That's a word you chose because you probably subconsciously equate dressing that way with being a slut.

I think it's quite unfair actually. I am not saying boys should ever do anything beyond staring only into girls' eyes and appreciate them for their brains, but I do think that it's not okay for girls to dress half naked.

Not my observations. I saw so many almost butt cheeks, skin tight, and frankly inappropriate dresses on all the girls. Scrolling through Facebook, I saw maybe one or two age appropriate dress. All of the other girls, and I will say most of the girls I saw are white, had incredibly short and tight dresses. The hemline ended right underneath their butts.

Even in middle school, I see girls with crop tops and bellies showing. Where's the limit?

Until it's your daughter's problem again. Arguing the hypothetical of this issue is dumb to me. I would like to live in a time and place where women didn't get ogled or harassed or pressured or made to feel uncomfortable by men. Or worst of all assaulted. Not there yet. So sending your daughters out in the world dressed this way and your actual plan is boys should learn to control themselves is just a bad plan. Wish it wasn't so, but it is. So good luck.

Please watch your language. They don’t look like prostitutes. They look like sex workers.

Finding it inappropriate is not the same as slut shaming. It would be inappropriate to come to work dressed like that. It’s a clubbing outfit where the point is to look sexy and maybe have sex that evening. Not appropriate for work or school or high school dances. Not because sex is bad per se. But because high schoolers generally aren’t encouraged to be having sex so dressing like they are is not appropriate.

On one hand, I kind of love that girls are comfortable wearing short dresses. At the age I was way too self-conscious and am glad that wasn't the fashion then.

On the other hand, it seems performative when teens wear them now. And aren't they freezing?

I was at a large pre-party and there was no way for many of the girls to wear biker shorts. Their dress hems were 1 inch from the crotch.
Any bike short (if it actually had more than a 1" inseam) would show.

I saw one girl in particular: the skirt of her dress was flounced and it was 1 inch beneath her crotch. I can see a completely body con dress at least staying in place at that length but this did not make sense (she was walking at time and I just averted my eyes (and I'm a mom)).
