Our garbage gym Lifetime Centreville is ripping out the indoor basketball courts and replacing it with all pickleball

not indoors. and obviously playing on an indoor court is much better in every way. And they aren't reducing the membership fees to reflect the lack of basketball. In fact they are telling people if they want to keep the basic amenity of court space, they have to drive 30 minutes to go elsewhere AND pay a whole lot more. Hence the unhappy customers.

They're kids! Why can't they play outside?! We actually have great weather here in the DC area.

Kids in my neighborhood like the neighborhood basketball courts because you see a lot more people you know. You can just ask neighbors to go with you anytime.

I see people with portable pickleball nets on basketball courts all the time.
Why can't the pickleballers also just play outside. Or, on actual outdoor tennis courts?
Not sure why the kids can't have their space to play indoors. What's the issue with splitting the space?

Why?

I plan pickleball, I don't play basketball?

My kids play basketball, but I don't begrudge a gym taking some basketball space for pickleball, yoga, pilates, etc. I want a healthy community and I like to see the old people out there enjoying themselves. (I guess the old people didn't like seeing kids playing basketball).
Honestly, yu sound very self-centered.

Stop calling people old

Old is not an insult. Old is just a fact. We only saw old people ever playing pickleball.

The way you are using it an insult. And let me introduce you to Anna Leigh Waters, 16 years old professional player! Not old by a LONG shot.

I've never seen a business so clearly say: We are no longer interested in business from families. Their perogative of course, I would love to see their research showing how much more profitable senior citizens must be over families.

We also go to Lifetime and no one has ever asked for our feedback on anything, sent a survey, asked us as we were checking in etc. We don't play pickleball or basketball but the "member feedback" thing is clearly BS.

0-------

’m writing to share an update about our programming at the club. Specifically, beginning in mid-October, we will be converting our basketball courts and rock wall into six permanent pickleball courts. This decision results from member feedback and the rapidly growing demand for pickleball – the fastest growing sport in the nation. Once completed, we’ll be providing many more ways to participate in this fun and engaging sport, including open play, mixers, clinics, leagues and lessons for all ages and skill levels.

With this change, our programming at Centreville will shift away from basketball, rock wall, kids summer camp and birthday parties; however, the remainder of our kids programming will not be affected. I understand this may be disappointing news for those who regularly use the basketball or rock wall amenities and want to reinforce that this decision was made with considerable thought. Ultimately, we believe the transition to pickleball will best address current member demand.

Please know that our other area locations continue to offer these displaced services, as follows:

Life Time Ashburn-Sterling — rock wall, kids summer camp
Life Time Reston — basketball courts, rock wall, kids summer camp
Life Time Gainesville — basketball courts, kids summer camp
If you would like to discuss access to any of these clubs, I invite you to speak with a member of our concierge team who will be happy to assist.

As always, I welcome your questions and thank you for choosing to be a Life Time member. It is our pleasure to serve you.

In health,

Robert Love | General Manager

You seem to be struggling with logic. I also have only seen older people participating at Lifetime pickleball courts. Does that mean no young people enjoy the activity, ever? No, of course not. It is probably a wonderful way for children to spend time with their grandparents, since it is so easy to play. But at Lifetime, it is definitely populated by the retired set.

What else for kids is there? Do they mean they will still be providing swim lessons for a fee? How generous LOL! Those are pretty much all the activities for kids besides the daycare.

You lost. You and your kids aren’t special to anyone except yourselves.

-not old, not a Boomer, not “blue-haired,” don’t play pickleball, so don’t bother being predictable

Their summer camps had a lot of kids & there were birthday parties there every weekend in the winter. They must be salivating over some kind of enormous anticipated pickleball revenue stream to get rid of the summer camps.

Sounds like you should get a job at Lifetime! You would really fit into their We Hate the Future corporate ethos.

Maybe it all those families were signing up in droves, using the facilities, hosting all their parties there, this wouldn't have been the outcome. Highly unlikely the gym decided to cut off highly profitable programming to satisfy a few pickle ball enthusiasts.

How is pickleball so lucrative?
Clearly, their number crunchers decided that they will gain more old people memberships just for the pickleball then they will lose family/young adult memberships who want basketball/camps/etc.

Are they planning on charging extra pickleball fees somehow? How are they thinking they will make so much money off this? I don't see how they are expecting to make so much money off this one activity compared to all the other things people go to the gym to do.

Actually it sounds like you have a brilliant idea for a family oriented gym. Run by families, for families, since there is a great untapped need there. You should look into it.

They are gambling that the people who initially signed up to use the basketball courts amenity will grumble but keep their membership for working out, but that lots more people will join specifically for the pickleball.

The Fairfax basketball courts are always busy when I workout at night there. Its not like these are empty courts just sitting unused.
