Our garbage gym Lifetime Centreville is ripping out the indoor basketball courts and replacing it with all pickleball

Anonymous
Our kids and friends use those courts all the time.
When we joined the gym, there were two full size courts.
Then, they had converted one court for pickleball, and left one for basketball. This made sense, as old people could play pickleball during the day when no one is really playing basketball.

When our kids go, the basketball court is very crowded, and there are 2-4 seniors playing pickleball.

Now they are ripping up both courts and the rock climbing wall, and putting in a zillion permanent pickle ball courts.
Putting aside the bizarre decision to take away actual sports (rock climbing and basketball) and put in an "activity"--where can we join instead where our kids can play? Obviously they think they will make more money off old people than families (they are also getting rid of birthday parties and kids camps as they used the basketball court for those)

They said we could transfer our membership to two far-away gyms that still have half basketball/half pickleball, but those are a higher tier gym and we would have to pay more $100+ more per month and drive there. Gainesville/Reston are long drives.

Does anyone know any other gyms with indoor courts in the Centreville/Herndon area? Nzone is difficult because when kids are out of school, their courts are usually rented to leagues.

It doesn't make business sense to me. Pickleball is portable.

Have pickleball during the weekdays when the basketball courts are probably not being used much. Then, take the pickleball down and have basketball after school and at nights. Have pickleball Sat and Sun mornings. Have basketball afternoons and nights. Everyone is happy, everyone pays for memberships, you get double use out of the same space.

I plan pickleball, I don't play basketball?

Rock climbing is a "sport" by pickleball is an "activity"? Lol

The correct analysis is how many people can and do play on a pickleball court vs a basketball court and rock wall.

Inefficient use of space lowers gym capacity so people quit.

But it's a gym, not the pros. Why can't they share the court, alternating setups every few hours?

well, yes. Have you done both?

There are lots of outdoor basketball courts- why not use those?

I am not a pickleball fan (it's like twice as loud as tennis!) but our outdoor courts are packed.

It sounds like they're not interested in appealing to kids or teens.

You can fit multiple pickleball courts on one full size basketball court. Lifetime's original setup for its gyms was two full size basketball courts. They would sometimes use one of the courts for giant zumba classes, or birthday parties, etc. but otherwise basketball. Then, they took one court and made it a permanent pickleball area with 4 pickleball courts and kept the other basketball court for camps, parties, basketball, giant zumba classes, etc. This seemed like a business-drive decision (maximizing your activities: space ratio). Taking away a multipurpose area for solely pickleball seems dumb, to me, but as as business, they must have run the numbers.

NP- what?! Pickleball is the sport and rock climbing is more of an activity. Maybe outdoor rock climbing is a sport

People went to play pickup games, there aren't other people to play outdoors. Also, weather? Also, many people have basketball as part of their gym routine, play basketball, lift weights, etc. Its a sport and exercise.

Why can't the pickleball people just play outdoors? Lots of outdoor courts!
