Transgender Chess Ban

I'm sure your dad said the same thing about gay people.

No one knows, because they’re actually “sex reveal” ceremonies. But we’re uncomfortable with the word sex, so we started calling them gender reveals.

The labeling of a fetus as male or female is very damaging.

Who is damaged? The fetus or those labeling the fetus? Sex or gender, chose the term you prefer. With the exception of those with chromosomal anomalies it is a binary choice (xx or xy).

I simply don’t understand how anyone can be so cruel. There’s not a lot of acceptance of being transgender as it is and it’s gratuitous to keep piling on.

Replace "transgender" with "black" and step back 70 years and nothing would have changed.

There are so many people on this forum who would be dumping milkshakes on sit-in protestors and cheering the dogs and fire hoses if they had been born in the 1930s.

They'll try to tell you "oh no, I'd be all for civil rights if I was around back then, but this trans thing is different!"

It's not, and they wouldn't, but it's what they have to tell themselves to believe they're good people despite their bigoted beliefs.

No it’s not. Stop comparing your imaginary oppression to to the heinous discrimination faced by black people. Trans people have full civil rights under the law, and this absurd analogy is highly offensive.

When restrictions are placed on trans-women competing in something like swimming, I at least understand the rationale. Hormones can arguably provide a physical advantage for biological males who transition to become women. (Although my understanding is that the evidence for this is not as robust as one might think.) But what the hell is the rationale here for chess? You don't need a big old bicep to move the bishop across the board.

Agree this is different from swimming, but I don’t even care anymore. Trans people lost support from me in this area when they did the extreme sports stuff. I’m done.

+1

Exactly why trans have lost my support. Unreasonable and too extreme. No comparison to the black civil rights movement.

Men should be kept out of all women’s sex-based sports and competitions. Biology over feelings.

How? The discrimination is not based on relevant biological differences...it's based on bigotry.

How do you know this?

Chess is not a physical sport. WHAT THE FUQ DIFFERENCE DOES GENDER MAKE IN CHESS?

This is pendulum idiocy.

To whom?

To the being about to be murdered at will?

DP... Biologically a human fetus does not even have any meaningful indication of gender for at least the first 6-8 weeks of development. And even then it can be indeterminate for a whole host of reasons such as mosaicism et cetera. So how are you going to do any labeling?

A-hole Republicans harass and bully trans people for the same reason they harass, bully and scapegoat immigrants -- because they can! The GOP choose the most vulnerable people they can find and vilify them, to the applause of their low-information base.

It's easy to convince Maggot-types that trans people are "weird" or "perverse" because they aren't typical, but trans people are as normal as most other human beings. They were simply born into a body that doesn't match their gender identity. I know several trans people who knew they were trans since they were toddlers.

Harassing and bullying trans people is cruel, but the GOP thinks its perfectly all right because they get political traction out of it. I think it will stop when they find another vulnerable group to scapegoat -- homeless children, maybe? Babies born to crack-addicted moms? People in wheelchairs? ("What's with all the ramps? Why do THEY get special treatment?")

The thing is, PP, no one cares that you're "done."

It is not a physical sport and really not a sport. Yet they are making a women's division. Presumably this means that there is a sex based difference in performance.

What about the trans people who agree with you about swimming and agree with you about chess? Do you not support individuals? You paint everyone with the same brush?

Trans people have become more visible in the last several years. This has led to them being accepted and demonized a lot more. I don't know which of those is chicken and which is egg.

It has also become a proxy war over gender relations generally. The people who want to exclude trans people from things tend to also be people who want society to enforce gender roles more rigidly for cis-men and cis-women. The people who want to be more welcoming of trans people tend to also be people who want society to relax or abandon gender roles.

Trans people have become more numerous. The numbers have skyrocketed. That's why they are more visible, there are many more than there were 5 years ago, and many many more than there were 10 years ago.

Yes, people tend to come out of the closet more readily when they see other people doing the same.

Chicken and egg, indeed. Trans isn't a biological existence so one does wonder how much of it is driven by cultural phenomena and personal beliefs and enabling people. Which, of course, gets to the heart of the matter as the gender divisions in sports is based on biological differences between the genders. Still, the scarcity of older people coming out as trans compared to coming out as gay or lesbian when gay rights became more established is telling.

It might not be that simple. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17875490/#:~:text=As%20sexual%20differentiation%20of%20the,each%20other%2C%20resulting%20in%20transsexuality.

Abstract

During the intrauterine period the human brain develops in the male direction via direct action of a boy's testosterone, and in the female direction through the absence of this hormone in a girl. During this time, gender identity (the feeling of being a man or a woman), sexual orientation, and other behaviors are programmed. As sexual differentiation of the genitals takes places in the first 2 months of pregnancy, and sexual differentiation of the brain starts during the second half of pregnancy, these two processes may be influenced independently of each other, resulting in transsexuality. This also means that in the case of an ambiguous gender at birth, the degree of masculinization of the genitals may not reflect the same degree of masculinization of the brain. Differences in brain structures and brain functions have been found that are related to sexual orientation and gender.
