Global entry with unenrolled child

I arrived at Newark - where the app was telling me they used MPC - filled out the form, had my approval ticket, and when I got to passport control they said “no, we don’t do that” and had to go to the regular line anyway. Thankfully, we were the only flight hitting the line at that time, so we went right through. I had a connection, so I would have been really pissed if I had to wait on the really long line.

Yeah I arrived at Dulles a few months ago and they “weren’t using MPC right now”
Clearly no explanation or anything - just gruffly told to get into the very long regular line.
So definitely use it if available, but sometimes it’s not.

I arrived in Dulles last week and the app kept giving an error message that the forms couldn’t be submitted. I wouldn’t count on the app.

My experience is that GE was granted quickly for my kids and you can try to select GE approval upon arrival. But I don’t know if that means you can go through GE then.

You can not, because you haven't been approved yet. As you go through the regular (or MPC) line, as the CBP officer where the "Enrollment on Arrival" office is located, as you have a child who you need to do the interview for. They will point you in the right direction. At Dulles it's in the hallway right by the baggage claim belts, so after passport control, but before clearing customs and exiting the airport.

Are you sure about that? I did my renewal at the entry point.

I did too. Separate line beside GE, marked “GE Interviews” or something similar. It has like 2 people in it ahead of me. The “interview” was taking photo, taking fingerprints and about 3 questions (every committed a crime in any country? Ever had a customs violations? And maybe one other). But, you have to already be approved for the interview.

This as Dulles in February 2023

“Have you ever been a member of a domestic terrorist organization?”

It’s a super quick interview with small children. BTDT.

Yes but you also can’t do the interview upon arrival until your application has been approved - the interview upon arrival is instead of scheduling an interview at another time. It is not a replacement for the entire process.

But how long does approval take? MinE was approved in less than 48 hours— but I’m a Fed with a security clearance, which may have moved it along.

Seemingly about 60-65% of people get conditionally approved very quickly - within 10 days or so. For the rest it can be an interminable wait sometimes 6 months plus. Kids do seem to be more likely to be in the shorter group- maybe 75%, but not always.

There is no rhyme or reason as to which group you will be in- people on Flyertalk have tried to figure out patterns for years but there aren't any. Some people with federal security clearance get the quick approval, others not. Sometimes a couple that travels together (and thus has the exact same travel patterns) will have one partner getting quick approval, and the other being in the long wait group. There is no way to tell which one you will be in, unfortunately.

My spouse, who had a top secret security clearance for 20 years, took four months to be given conditional approval. We couldn’t figure out what the hold up could be.
