Has anyone gotten naturally pregnant at 46?

Anonymous
Got pregnant at 45 which was a surprise because I had to do ivf in my 30’s. One grandma had her sixth at 40. We are happy to have a third but I would push your spouse for a vasectomy or get tubes tied if you would not want to be pregnant. Pregnancy at 45 is pretty tough physically!

A friend who just turned 46 is pregnant with a surprise pregnancy. In her case, she and her spouse are excited about it.

My neighbor. Her 6th.

My mom is Depression era generation and lots of her friends had babies well into their 40s. . Several were grandmas before their own final baby. My mom told me that happened a lot back then.

I'm 47. I've had 2 periods in the last 12 months, and maybe 3-4 in the 12 months prior to that. Definition of "menopause" is 12 months with no period, so I'm waiting until I see 12 months.

If you wind up pregnant and want to terminate for medical reasons, you may be forced to carry to term. Or you may have a miscarriage and be unable to seek medical care for yourself until you are "sick enough."

I am in the Northeast so I am good. And yes, I would terminate for a genetic or chromosomal abnormality.

Four pages of responses, 2 first person accounts of a pregnancy, 1 ended in miscarriage, 1 reported birth. LOTS of second-hand information - tons of which probably involves science and mothers who are actually grandmothers/other relatives.

The possibility is there, but it's like hoping to marry ryan gosling. Sure there is a possibility of it happening, but it's very, very unlikely.

Sure, but if the question is when to pull the goalie, seems like there's no harm in waiting.

I've been using contraception for 30 years. Another 18 months won't hurt.

My first cousin had her second baby at 44. 18 year gap in between though.

ABSOLUTELY! Here are some examples:
Naomi Gryn at 51
Janet Jackson at 50
Rachel Weisz at 48
Hilary Swank at 48 (twins)
Bridgette Neilson: 56

Professor Nargund, MD states, “It is likely that we could see more women having children at an older age in the future"

And all were with reproductive interventions

I think the only one with that was Gryn.

Ever heard of donor eggs or people freezing their own eggs?

I'd add supermodel Naomi Campbell at 50

I know with 100% certainty that my grandmother becoming pregnant at 47 involved no science at all.

It's not very very unlikely - it's probably somewhere between 1-5% (and that figure doesn't account for OP's proven fertility) - not super likely but likely enough to be worth using birth control.

+1 The majority of abortion patients are not teenagers. They are married/partnered women who already have 2+ children.

Where is the info to back this up? I've always suspected this, but don't know for sure.

The majority are somewhere in between: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/...ortion-in-the-u-s-2/

That said, I and two other women I'm very close to (who are not friends with each other) had our first abortions between 2020 and 2023. At the time, each of us was married with two kids and in our late 30s or 40.

What are the demographics of women who had abortions in 2020?
In the 46 states that reported data to the CDC in 2020, the majority of women who had abortions (57%) were in their 20s, while about three-in-ten (31%) were in their 30s. Teens ages 13 to 19 accounted for 8% of those who had abortions, while women in their 40s accounted for 4%.

The vast majority of women who had abortions in 2020 were unmarried (86%), while married women accounted for 14%, according to the CDC, which had data on this from 39 states and New York City (but not the rest of New York).
