Is saying belief in your god and belief Odin is a god is the same thing "trashing" your faith? |
+1 I am an atheist who doesn't bash people of faith or say they are wrong. I state what I believe and at the same time respect someone's different beliefs. Just because some atheists on here seem to up for a fight doesn't mean they represent the average atheist... |
Somehow people have learned to respect people of other faiths. Perhaps someday soon people will learn to respect people who don't have a faith, i.e., people who do not believe in any supernatural beings - no fairies, no elves, no Gods, no sons of God. |
Nobody ever answers questions like this, they just throw out their accusations, when the truth is ANY reasonable discourse about evidence for the supernatural and comparisons to other supernatural beliefs is met with outrage. You can't bear to have your beliefs questioned, I guess, even in an open discussion forum. |
I’m the PP you quoted and I’m atheist! And I drink White Claw! |
I'm not the poster who quoted you. Personally, I thought the highlighted section save the atheism chat for the block party after a few White Claws. was just a personal opinion that I disagreed with. Good to know that you are an atheist -- to me, it indicates that we do not all think alike. Believers, take note. Not all atheists think alike! The one quoted above would recommend being a little drunk before mentioning their atheism. Question: Does that go for the religious neighbor too -- should they have been a little drunk before mentioning their religion and asking OP about theirs? |
Q: Should Religious people be a little drunk before mentioning their religion? A: In today's society, it is not needed. People generally assume others are religious. If you're not religious, however, getting drunk can bolster your courage to be honest and potentially provide an excuse for saying something perceived as antisocial. |
And yet, many of you trash all Christians, Jews or Catholics based on the actions of sum. Yet none of you “I don’t bash” atheists ever steps up to correct your fellow atheists. It’s hard not to conclude that they’re doing work for you. |
Hard for you to conclude, maybe, but when you falsely say that "many of you trash all Christians, Jews or Catholics based on the actions of sum" it's hard to conclude that you're not just taking the opportunity to anonymously bash atheists. Perhaps by trashing, you mean not believing that Jesus is Lord and Savior of all who lives with God, a supernatural being, in heaven. That's what an atheist believes -- also Jews and other non-christians, although they usually believe in a supernatural God - just not that he had a son that he sent to earth to be crucified. |
Omg just stop No one is bigoted you need a dictionary Atheists aren’t on this forum bashing religion they are bashing you freaks shoving your religion down our throats like in schools. Or what clothes women wear like in Missouri. Or your judgementmental crap about premarital sex when your pastors or ministers or priests or rabbis are molesting kids. Or how women are second class citizens in most religions Religion is a joke period |
| I don't understand why the new neighbors felt the need to ask about OPs faith and where they go to church. OP was showing proper social grace in empathizing with the new neighbors. They took it to another level by asking about faith and where OP attended church. That's very uncouth. OP-you answered honestly and tried to move the conversation along. That is fine. |
Ah, it’s all clear now. |
Religion can be a joke. It can also be very comforting and offer community and (false) hope that your life will continue forever in heaven after you die. |
OP was fine, I agree. As for the new neighbor, I don't think they were uncouth. They were simply acting within the current social standard which assumes that most people - and especially nice people, like OP - must also be religious and go to church. |
None of us, other than the OP, know exactly the tone of the conversation nor exactly what was said. Based on what the OP wrote, it sounds like the neighbors were looking for a new church and maybe wondering if OP had any recommendations. It doesn’t sound like they were engaging OP in a theological debate. One of the nice things about atheism is that you don’t have to proselytize so I’m not sure why you are so worried about the response OP or any other atheist gives to this question. |
