I do not want our kids to bow to authority. I want them to be creative, rebellious, free-thinking and not afraid to stand up for what they believe in.

+1. Amen.

That’s great but once they’re in the military, lives depend on following chain of command and understanding much more nuance regarding authority. If you knew anything about the training, you’d understand that they are not just trained dogs.

You can have your own political thoughts and beliefs but you do not bring them to the office. Like a grown up.

PP said nothing about her husband bringing them "to the office." He is allowed to have opinions. He is a grown up.

If he keeps his opinions to himself, then he's not being political.

He doesn't need to keep his opinions to himself. He's allowed to express his opinions to his friends, neighbors, wife, etc.
Do you really think that all military members are locked "in the office" and allowed no contact with anyone but his co-workers?

Actually he’s not. He can have his own opinions, of course, but it’s unprofessional to share them with more than his immediate family. He represents the the military and his comments carry weight. People assume he has knowledge they don’t and give more authority to what he says. And no matter how uninformed or political his take, there are too many people who will assume it’s gospel. “My neighbor is a colonel and he said…”. Horribly unprofessional. Seriously messed up ethics.

I have a spouse acquaintance on FB always sharing dumb Breitbart level stories. All her Fox loving friends assume her high ranking husband shares her views and want to know what he thinks. It’s toxic.

I’ve noticed that the current young people are struggling more with this idea and with authority in general. Between that and the physical fitness issue, I’m not surprised it’s harder to find enough people to join now.

But yes, there have been other times that pilots were given bonuses to stay or not allowed to retire. Not news.

Your father was an idiot and he and your mom had marriage issues. His odd behavior had nothing to do with the miltiary.

You just don’t understand professional behavior, mature responsibilities, or having an identity outside of politics. One of the many examples of our society is racing to the bottom.

+1 Exactly! Notice that the previous poster views having respect for authority as a "bow to authority." And people wonder why young adults today have trouble in employment situations with a chain of command.

Every illegal who crosses the border should either be sent back or sent to the nearest basic training center.

Imagine the moral panic at Maret or Sidwell if a Marine recruiter showed up on campus.

Burning group chats!

Sidwell is a Quaker school and thus pacifist. Conscientious objectors.

Goobers are dumb.

Why would a pacifist religious school invite recruiters to their school? Just calling it like it is.

Unemployment rates are at historic lows- I'm sure that has nothing to do with it. Not to mention that nearly 40% of 18-25 year olds are drug users.

And overweight and out of shape. That’s been a problem for awhile now.

Free school lunch was started by FDR to fatten up starving school kids during the Depression. They were having trouble finding recruits who were height/weight proportionate. We've come full circle. Time to feed kids a healthy breakfast and lunch and teach healthy habits. Require phys ed in all schools K-12. The money should come from the Defense Budget.

My father went to Exeter and graduated from Harvard. He retired as a Colonel and had another career with the DOD and later as a consultant. One of his other Harvard friends retired as a Colonel. My brother served in the Air Force with a Harvard PhD. He left as a Captain before age 30.
You are really ignorant about the military, aren't you?

Half of America is so tribal and ignorant though that when a First Lady made healthy school food and fitness a priority, they screamed “socialism!!” So I guess they’re ok with a declining military.

My husband thinks that if some form of military service was mandatory, there wouldn’t some many lost males.
