It is an area that is between Herndon, Reston, Chantilly, Oakton, and FAIRFAX. |
|
I live in 20171.
My neighborhood was zoned for Oakton until Westfield was built. Across the street from my neighborhood entrance, kids go to South Lakes. Within a mile or so it's Chantilly or still Oakton. Herndon is the farthest. What's super close is the Oak Hill post office. And when we sign up for anything way over at the Herndon Community Center, we pay more because we are not Town of Herndon. So -- while I will use Herndon here and there, Oak Hill actually seems more genuine. The only reason I see that people think using Oak Hill seems pretentious is that if they view Herndon as "less than." Like, ugh, Herndon, well sure people would want to avoid using that... but if they do they are pretentious.

| It is a strange area where parts of Herndon (not town of), Reston, Chantilly, and Fairfax (not city) kind blend together. When asked, I say I live in Herndon, Fox Mill neighborhood. My college roommate a couple streets over and says she lives in Herndon, Franklin Farm area. It works. |
But what about the neighborhoods in between that aren't part of a big HOA? Those are Oak Hill. They don't have an HOA name to say they live in. |
Actually, most of them do have an HOA. Few people say they live in Herndon. Why? Because they don't. Many will say they live near Franklin Farm--which they do. |
| I don't understand why Bennett Rd and the surrounding roads off of wear ox have a Herndon address. It totally makes no sense as it is nowhere near Herndon. It's also not "Oak Hill". I feel like it should be Oakton. |
Big, named HOAs. A lot of those neighborhoods off of West Ox Rd between Franklin Farm, Fox Mill, and Chantilly Highlands are tiny 1-2 street neighborhoods. Nobody has heard of them. |
It was like that back in 1997 when I graduated! We lived on one side of the Fairfax County Parkway at Franklin farm and went to Chantilly. The other side of the street by the KinderCare also Herndon limits went to Oakton. |
Emerald Chase is not near the Toll Road yet they go to Westfield. The people who live on one street in Emerald Chase share a backyard boundary with people in Chantilly Highlands, a neighborhood which goes to Chantilly HS. |
| I’m in 20171 and say I live in Oak Hill Herndon near Franklin Farm. If they don’t know where FF is I say near Dulles. It’s a mouthful. |
I say "Between Fair Oaks Hospital and Dulles Airport." Close enough. |
| "The Oak Hill part of Herndon, on the edge of Oakton" |
Sure |
|
I used to say Herndon--even before Oak Hill. But, then people would say--"oh, that is such a cute little town" and I would have to explain that I lived closer to Chantilly and Fairfax. So, now i say near Franklin Farm--close to Chantilly or Dulles airport.
But, what does this have to do with anything? Most of Oak Hill zip is closer to three other high schools. There is a poster who desperately wants kids from this zip to go to Herndon. |
I'm the OP of this thread and we are looking at houses in Franklin Farm because we really like the neighborhood/community feel of it. I asked this question because I don't really want my kids on a bus for an hour to get to high school (but my kid won't be in high school for many years). Chantilly HS and South Lakes both seem closer. Herndon High School looks too far, also and isn't as highly rated. |
