| It just seems SO FAR away? |
| It's been like that for at least 13 Years and and will only change minimally if a new Western HS is built 20 Years from now. So basically not changing for the next 50 Years. |
| The people who live in that part of Herndon are super embarrassed that they live in Herndon. One day they decided to tell everyone they live in “Oak Hill”. No ma’am, you live in Herndon. |
| It’s a function of four high schools (Madison, Oakton, Fairfax, and Woodson) being relatively close to one another while there are fewer schools further west. So the boundaries of all four of those schools extend much further west of the school locations. |
Ummm… it’s not part of TOH and most of Fairfax county is unincorporated. That means you can call those places anything you want. Fact is most of you in VA live in no-where’s-ville, Fairfax County. |
Madison is a local with fairly concise boundaries- Oakton is nearby and a regional. Rather than do te right thing years ago FCPS expands Oakton to fill in residences near Loudoun. Same for Mclean and Langley. Really poor planning along with FCPS not having the site by Carson now in possession of the Saudis. |

Also all Fairfax CIty kids must attend Fairfax High School as the city owns the school and pays the county to operate it and lets the county have a portion of seats. This also complicates the boundaries. Falls Church High also isn't that far from some of Woodson's boundary area. Big mess but nobody wants to make the necessary hard decisions. This is one reason we bought in Fairfax City in Walking distance of Fairfax HIgh School. Nice school in the middle of the pack. We could have maybe bought into one of the supposed DCUm better schools but we would have likely been in a neighborhood that could have been a likely redistrict target. BTW Fairfax City is great.

I grew up in Reston and just returned to NoVA. I went to meet with a client who said she lived in Oak Hill, so I looked it up on the Internet and said, “it’s this Herndon?” Boy, did she seem offended. 😊 |
That’s not the case for McLean any longer. As Tysons and WFC get built up, the boundaries of both McLean and Marshall stand to get more compact. Wouldn’t be surprised if a good chunk of Marshall out near Wolf Trap gets moved to Madison at some point. The Langley boundaries, on the other hand, stretch across the entire northern part of the county, while the school isn’t too far from Arlington, so that’s like Oakton on steroids. |
OP here, LOL! I'm so confused about why Herndon extends out so far -- there's a town of Herndon that is where I actually thought Reston was, and then Herndon addresses extend south all the way to 66? Some of them are Herndon, some are Oak Hill, some just go with Fairfax, I guess PP is correct in that Fairfax County is just "pick your own address"! |
It mostly corresponds to zip codes. Same deal with Silver Spring in MoCo and Sterling in Loudoun - each covers a lot of territory. |
I live in Oak Hill, but say Herndon (or even Reston) most of the time because only really local locals ever know where Oak Hill is! We are closer to Reston than Herndon…it is just so strange. (Not from here, so I don’t know the origins of its name.) |

This is the original Oak Hill farm house: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3020-W-Ox-Rd-Herndon-VA-20171/51763033_zpid/.
It’s right next to Franklin Farm but I don’t ever really hear Franklin Farm people say they live in Oak Hill. They just say Franklin Farm. But then houses further away closer to the town of Herndon use Oak Hill. It’s weird. |
I grew up in Franklin Farm, moved away for a couple years, and then moved back to Franklin Farm. Not once have I heard someone say they live in Franklin Farm. They say they live in Oak Hill or Herndon. Even when working at events at the schools or at youth sporting events, I've only ever heard people say Oak Hill or Herndon. I've never heard anyone say Franklin Farm as though it's an address, town, or incorporated city. |

Grew up in Reston and when I first heard people say they were from Oak Hill I was like WTH? Then it just became evident they didn't want to say they were from Herndon.
