Ann Arbor is an awesome college town. UMD is not.

'awesome college town' means middle of nowhere, boring, and nothing much to do. Stuck in the school.

This is nutso comment. I didn't even go to Ann Arbor buy my DD would have run there in a heartbeat (not accepted). If you can afford it, go to AA/Michigan.

It sounds like the two CS programs are comparable but Michigan is the stronger school overall, so if it were me I would not hesitate to choose Michigan

While Maryland has come on strong in recent years, many people Gen X or older don’t appreciate that it is a top state school now. Dumb dumbs went there back in our day whereas smart kids who got some Bs went to Michigan

IF your kid is interested in cyber security, then UMD. Otherwise Michigan.

I do believe Route 1 affects UMD's ranking. How they call that area College "Park" is beyond me.

And yet, Ann Arbor is 1000 times the college experience to College Park. They aren't even close to the same tier of college town experience.

how so?

Also, would your DC be ok with extreme winter weather?

North Dakota is extreme. Michigan isn't too different from DC in a normal year. This year wasn't normal. But, people learn to live in colder climates. A coat, hat and gloves go a long way to helping.

MI alum here- I have lived in Europe, Asia, CA, east and west coasts and my degree opened a lot of doors for me with just the brand name. Only place that did not recognize the name as prestigious was the mid-south/south because they worshipped auburn, bana and sewaner. Never had plans to stay there long term though.

UMD has no cache in the DC area...Michigan has a huge alumni presence in DC...there is really no difference on that front.

Maybe in CS, but that’s about it.

Really? Michigan has top 10 programs in just about every major and discipline. UMD doesn't come close on that score.

Anonymous wrote:For Umich, is it CS Major in COE or LSA? Both takes the similar classes with LSA has 2 year of language requirements and COE has physics, chem, and multi variables and differential eq. 128 credits needed for COE graduation and 120 for LSA. Very tough CS program. EECS280 (first real CS class) has 1450 kids. Long waiting for help in office hour. 25% will drop/fail the class or take Pass/Fail. The next class EECS 281 is another killer class. If your child has lot of programming experience, it will be good in Umich, otherwise it can easily suck in the weeder classes.

It is true, these are tough weeder classes, but kids do get A's in them and move forward through the Major or as a minor.

No, it means a town that is solely focused on the university, well other than Madison that also has a state capitol.

Ann Arbor is regularly mentioned as one of the top, if not the top, college towns in the entire country. Music, sports, food, clubs, activities, there is always something going on with such a wide variety of people and interests. College Park is a school with essentially a highway running through it and not much in terms of bars and restaurants. It depends on greater DC for cultural and music activities, though it does have a nice bike path running though campus.
