San Franciso reparations

Ethnic Japanese people were also literally kept in labor camps. In some families, US soldiers of Japanese descent went to fight in the US military and their wives and children were sent to labor camps. Shameful. Many of the victims are still alive today. No one is rallying to pay them.

????They did get reparations--though it was peanuts. In 1988.

Chinese people are not Japanese, you racist.

Go look up what California did to the Chinese using what is known as the Truckee Method.

https://www.moonshineink.com/tahoe-news/the-truckee-method/

The Chinese had established businesses, homes, and communities in CA that were burned down or the Chinese were forced to relocate due to intimidation from the Truckee Method. The Chinese were redlined, and couldn't even work except in restaurants.or doing laundry. It destroyed intergenerational wealth for the Chinese. The Chinese also pretty much built the entire west, were paid less than white workers, and many died in what are pretty much slave like conditions where they had to hand blast through insanely hard granite in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The transcontinental railroad that developed this country would not exist without the exploited labor of the Chinese. Why isn't California giving reparations to the Chinese first? CA never had slaves, but they sure as crap exploited, oppressed, redlined, marginalized, and even murdered the Chinese. Hell, Asians like the Chinese weren't even allowed to defend themselves in CA courts if accused of a crime.

Billions given to Japanese Americans.

What happened to Japanese Americans was atrocious and not enough gets talked about it.

Would you have preferred they not received reparations? Or are Asian Americans not allowed to complain? They only received $20,000 each, and it was only given to people who directly suffered from internment.

20k in 1992 after internment 1942-1945. so 50 years later for 3years of internment per 20k, adjusted for. in 2019 it was 400 years since the first slave ship (1619) was brought into the US and then we will go through proclamation we will say, which was 1865 so 250 years of slavery.

250/3= 83.3x20k= 1666000 would be the equivalent for survivors of slavery 50 years past abolition so find all the slaves who were still alive in 1905 and pay to their descendants.

cool?

Reparations are much easier to justify when it’s paid directly to the living survivors of the harm. Roughly 40,000 Japanese Americans internees died before the Civil Liberties Act was passed and didn’t get anything.

Well then I guess the time for reparations has passed since apparently it took 50 years to get reparations for Japanese and it's been 400 and counting for enslaved African Americans.

I'll also mention that black people did not willingly come here.

If you're going to do this right, it needs to be set up as a perpetual trust rather than a lump sum or time-limited transfer. Any dollar amount will be eaten away by inflation otherwise. You could tack it on to Social Security or run it as part of CALPERS depending on how you want to scale it.

I can’t see anything wrong with this plan.

Go for it SF; equity demands it.

If they do this, wouldn't black folks move to SF in droves? I certainly would. Is there some kind of prior residency requirement in this?

Why do black people deserve reparations from the State of California or the city of San Francisco? Reparations for what? Seems like other groups should be ahead of them.

Five million is nothing in SF. A small family home that is commonly passed on as inheritance in white families.

There are eligibility criteria.

Understatement of the century. Elections have consequences.

This is what Californians want. There are many extremely wealthy liberals in the state. I’m reasonably certain that they will open their wallets for this and the over $200,000 statewide payments that will be happening—and justly so.

And what other groups would those be?

African Americans largely weren't around back when California did its worst.

Latino and Chinese Americans suffered much more. Filipino Americans went through a lot too.

The largest lynching in US history happened in California. The victims weren't African Americans.

Can pick up a book until you tell me which ones I'm supposed to be reading about....

Interesting that there are outwardly white people who are descendants of past black and white unions that could receive these reparations. This is getting even more interesting by the day.

As far as reparations go -- let's start from the source. Descendants of black slaves should start by going to Africa and asking for reparations from the descendants of the African tribes that sold many of their ancestors into slavery.
