IU is located in the state of Indiana.

Good luck with that. Parents are so dumb.

And JMU is in a random mountain town in central Va, not a world city.

DP. Surely you're not claiming that Bloomington is a... "world city"??

I can only conclude that that poster has never been to IU. When my sibling was there, there was a literal tent city of kids camping out for world peace. For months at a time. With camp stoves. And the school was fine with it. IU is liberal!

That's all I need to know. My kid would hate it.

He applied to IU as a rolling "safety" (and was deferred at first, but now in), without taking it that seriously, but now it looks like JMU and IU may be only options. He wants IU and I feel like it's just so random. We're OOS for both, and the $ just really doesn't matter. We'll pay for wherever he wants to go. Anybody with experience at either of these? Wants to go to law school, so humanities major of some kind most likely.

I went to JMU and it's a nice school, but I would definitely check out IU. I've heard so many good things and was shocked to see how beautiful the campus is! It's always on lists for the most beautiful campus. If it's the same cost and that is where your son wants to go, then I would go there.

I think any kid could find their place there. That was more my point. But I’m glad I could help!

It's a big campus. Your kid might never see the tents.

Well what’s your point? Your kid can’t tolerate a small portion of a flagship university making a peaceful demonstration for a good cause? That’s wild.

Protests for vague "world peace," complete with a tent city are not my cup of tea, or my kid's. Sounds like something one would find at Oberlin or NYU or Smith. Knock yourself out if this appeals to you. It doesn't appeal to everyone. Moving on...

Ok. Well, if a state flagship is your cup of tea, good luck finding one with a student population that has a point or points of view totally in alignment with your own.

No, the poster I was responding to was acting like JMU was in some cosmopolitan location and thus an easy choice. It's not. Neither is IU, obviously.

I had not even heard of it until I was at UVA. Grew up in DC and literally had never heard of it.

So is your kid going to Liberty? Where are there highly educated people that isn't liberal? If you say Oxford or Tuscaloosa you will be proving my point.
