And FWIW, 1) I don't complain about everything APS does, and 2) people committing address fraud (or whatever you call it) in terms of where they can go to school is not even ON my list of things to worry about.

Really, people, I'm just venting.

so are you ok with people committing address fraud and filling up our schools?

Don't care one bit.

The question was the paragraph!

OP, this it the first I have heard of it also, but I get SO many APS emails I might have missed it.

Apparently it's a new process. I just got the email about an hour ago. What a pain to have to either find this paperwork or get a new copy... I'm annoyed, tbh.

You don’t have readily available copies of your lease or deed?

I probably do but they are filed away and, frankly, I really don't want to take the time to deal with it.

Then don't. Proof of residency is required for enrollment as allowed by Virginia law. Your kid is already enrolled, so the burden falls to the school if they want to unenroll them based on residency. Hopefully at least one obstinate parent refuses and then appeals it though the courts if the school takes action.

You don’t think the court would be pissed at the waste of resources when all people need to do if provide one document?

And all bc they “don’t want to” 😂. How ridiculous, you guys have probably spent more time reading this thread than it would’ve taken you to find the document.

It takes no time to not bother. The county knows where I live when it sends me property and vehicle tax bills, it can figure out where I live for enrollment purposes too

then I guess you can figure out how to reenroll your kid when they unenroll you. spoiler alert - you need proof of residency for that. have fun.

And if you are in a choice school, you may lose your spot. I am sure the people on the waitlist at HB will gladly take it from you, while providing proof of residency in a timely manner.

Bingo. And I suspect the choice schools are where this happens more.

That makes no sense at all. Or are you insinuating something about immersion schools?

DP. I assume PP means they are coveted spots that families don’t want to give up, even if they move.

I’m the PP. I’m insinuating nothing about immersion schools. I don’t even know what I would be insinuating.

These spots are highly sought after and — because the populations aren’t concentrated in a neighborhood, they’re spread all over the county — with no verification from time to time, it’s less easy to know if someone moves out of the zone.

I think it's 100 percent reasonable for APS to ask for this at 5th and 8th grade and in fact, if they don't do it, they are doing a poor job of managing their resources.

You should find it irritating that you're so disorganized this is somehow a big deal to you.

I am venting too. Nowhere in the email does it tell you HOW to submit, and when you go to the link in the email for more info, it has screen shots of how to upload, but not how to get to the page that allows the upload. Would really like to have all the how-tos in one place to make it as simple as possible for us idiot APS parents.

It does actually, towards the bottom. There is a direct link to the upload as well. Just did it, took only seconds.

Ok. You don’t have to submit the forms but you do need to pay tuition for a moocher.

You do if you move outside of Arlington.

If you move out of Arlington, you absolutely do.

We have one neighbor (family with three kids) right now who rents their house in Arlington (to a family with four kids) and lives with family in Fairfax. Arlington will see two sets of kids living at the same address. Will they investigate?

This isn’t the first family I’ve known to do this.

Also know an Arlington resident whose sister uses their address. I’m guessing this is more rampant than we realize and Arlington wants to crack down on it.

This is really good information and I'm taking it one step further for the good of the order:

School Registration? Request a copy of your deed by email. Send name and residence address to CircuitCourt@arlingtonva.us Please note “School deed request” in the subject line.

This is Op, I'm pretty sure I know where it is. We have a dusty file cabinate in the basement that we never enter except at tax time. Probably there

I just sent an email to them for the deed too. I know ours is somewhere in the basement but it’s not worth my time to dig it out and scan it if Arlington will email me a copy.

Hope APS told the deed people lots of requests would be coming in

I’m sure there is some level of residency fraud. I hope in all these apartment buildings they built they are enforcing occupancy limits. Because if it comes out they are not, it will only make it that much harder to get more apartments and affordable housing built.

It was a known "secret" that many of the kids of our daycare's teachers went to APS using the same relatives address....even though they would complain about their commute from Woodbridge, Lorton, etc.
Anonymous
APS better follow up on situations where they see multiple kids with different last names coming from same address. Some may be legitimate — blended families etc. But they better not just ask for this and then no one ever looks at it.

People will scream in the name of equity if we force kids out.
