And annual tuition/room/board is relatively lower at satellite campuses, for OOS students it’s about $35k (including the 6k break). At University Park there’s no 6k discount for OOS students. Also, tuition is higher at the main campus than at satellites. We pay @55k annual tuition for DS at University Park (taking 18hrs each semester)..

I’m from PA. An OOS student living on-campus would be utterly miserable at a satellite campus.

Can you explain why? Mine got into Behrend campus (it’s where the major is). Got some merit, but is debating whether it is worth it to go there (it looks small on a map).

Another PA person. Basically the good students go to State College Campus. The kids who go to satellite are either not good students (and hoping to transfer asap) or older students going back to school and commuting from where they live. It is not a real college experience.

It’s mostly that they can’t afford Penn State UP tuition or living costs, not that they’re not good students.

Cousin's son went to satellite for two years, then transferred to State College and graduated with an engineering degree. Think he proved that he's a good student.

and paying money to a school that protected a child molester and still paying him. plus $118 million to the victims plus Joe Paterno's wife receiving benefits from the school and his son is on the board of trustees.

That's what YOU ARE part of.

Stop it already with this. Fault the administration and people involved but you are being ridiculous. This is largest public university in Pennsylvania - it is not going away. What is your objective and why? Do you think tens of thousands of current students and hundreds of thousands of past students should be blamed for something that they had no part in? Do you think a large public university should be burnt to the ground?

How many contemptible things have institutions you have been involved with done and probably continue to do? Make some positive change but we are not going to be able to pass everything through a purity test and frankly seems like you are more finding an excuse to be mean.

I am surprised the Woke folks haven't made a scene about it. If it was something else they would. If they were funding an extreme politician I bet you would change your mind.

Exactly. We live in Pennsylvania and can only afford Penn state or Pitt. My kid has to go where they get in. What do you want them to do, burn down the entire institution and rename it? What good does that do? Pennsylvania is struggling enough. We can’t afford to do that.

What? They’re the most expensive state schools in the state!

What about West Chester?

Penn state is a top-ranked R1 university. My kid has already taken linear algebra in high school. He needs to go somewhere with top math and science options. West Chester does not have those opportunities. The choices are Pitt, Penn State and Temple. If you burn down Penn State, there are not enough seats at the other universities. It’s a ridiculous notion.

Not the person you're responding to. But I agree with the PP. No chance I'd let my kid apply there. Doesn't matter than other institutions are bad. Or there is positive change if that's the case. It's not "being mean" (way to diminish the victims, PP). It's a choice people make in a market of many choices. THat was an institutional failure that the school has not paid for sufficiently yet. Look at you defending them and it's been, what, 15 years? Those victims will bear their scars for their lifetime. Shame on you for diminishing that. Or judging people for making their own choices based on that.

Would you let your kid apply to Michigan?

Let? I had a debit card as a senior in high school.

It’s not top-ranked; it’s in the 50-60 range.

If you were worried about cost you’d send your kid to an OOS flagship with merit (in the south or Midwest) or an LAC known for producing PhD students.

He will apply to those places too. But he will go where he can get the best education with the least debt. It may be penn state. It probably won’t be podunk college in the middle of nowhere.

I stand by what I said.

I knew this would go the way all Penn State threads go on DCUM. I can’t believe we got three pages in before it started. It was a good conversation up to that point.

What happened was unspeakable.

What about other schools, why is there not the same level of hate at Michigan State (Nassar) or University of Michigan ($490M settlement fall of 22 for 30 years of sexual abuse by the physician to the football team).

Why is it that the students in the state are made to feel less than for going to their best college option because of what some sicko did? String up the perps, fire the president but treat them the way every other school is treated.

I did not go there, my kids don’t go there, I’m from CA but this is just crazy.
