3.88 weighted, 1150 SAT (not sure if she submitted or not).

Looked it up at PSU was more competitive than I was expecting. It’s good to have the first acceptance in hand. Not sure we can afford out of state tuition, but I think they may discount a little for surrounding states?

Waiting on VT, JMU and CNU plus a few others.

Anyone have any experience with financial aid at Penn State?

My DD has the same stats - 3.8 w and an 1150 SAT and was denied University Park but accepted at Altoona. Penn State does not superscore. I think my DD may have had a better chance for UP if she went test/optional.

Was accepted at JMU and is waiting on Pitt. She does not want to go to PSU Altoona.

not recommending this, but two mediocre students from OOS HS 3.0 and below ur SATs denied admission to main campus last two years. One needed to do summer program, and one only got in altooona. Both moms complained loudly and nonstop. Both kids granted regular admission - it’s a bit of a joke now amongst the students - “just have ur mom complain!”. The two kids are both athletes and there is clearly an air of entitlement around this situation

Fascinating. How does one "complain" about this sort of thing?

And annual tuition/room/board is relatively lower at satellite campuses, for OOS students it’s about $35k (including the 6k break). At University Park there’s no 6k discount for OOS students. Also, tuition is higher at the main campus than at satellites. We pay @55k annual tuition for DS at University Park (taking 18hrs each semester)..

I’m from PA. An OOS student living on-campus would be utterly miserable at a satellite campus.

Can you explain why? Mine got into Behrend campus (it’s where the major is). Got some merit, but is debating whether it is worth it to go there (it looks small on a map).

My friend's son from VA went to Behrend for two years and loved it. He was even contemplating staying there all four years, but he did end up moving up to Main Campus. You should check it out. It's a great option for someone who wants to ease into college as it's much smaller than University Park.

and paying money to a school that protected a child molester and still paying him. plus $118 million to the victims plus Joe Paterno's wife receiving benefits from the school and his son is on the board of trustees.

That's what YOU ARE part of.

Stop it already with this. Fault the administration and people involved but you are being ridiculous. This is largest public university in Pennsylvania - it is not going away. What is your objective and why? Do you think tens of thousands of current students and hundreds of thousands of past students should be blamed for something that they had no part in? Do you think a large public university should be burnt to the ground?

How many contemptible things have institutions you have been involved with done and probably continue to do? Make some positive change but we are not going to be able to pass everything through a purity test and frankly seems like you are more finding an excuse to be mean.

Not the person you're responding to. But I agree with the PP. No chance I'd let my kid apply there. Doesn't matter than other institutions are bad. Or there is positive change if that's the case. It's not "being mean" (way to diminish the victims, PP). It's a choice people make in a market of many choices. THat was an institutional failure that the school has not paid for sufficiently yet. Look at you defending them and it's been, what, 15 years? Those victims will bear their scars for their lifetime. Shame on you for diminishing that. Or judging people for making their own choices based on that.

Ridiculous. Feel free to do what you believe and you have no idea what I believe. I am in no way diminishing the victims.

I am against Scarlet Letters. I am against people who come on a message board to shit on some kid and their family who made it into a university. People who want to make other decent innocent people feel bad and themselves feel superior.

I guarantee that prior poster has no need for Penn State as an option. It is just some nice BS elitism and meanness to come shit on someone who might.

I would definitely pick JMU or Pitt over Altoona.

Same here.

Of course. If you are OOS there is no reason to go to a Commonwealth campus. Even if you want to go to PSU University Park, go elsewhere and transfer after two years.

They accept very few transfers outside of the commonwealth campuses, just an FYI.
