Dealing with period at school (DD11)

Has she actually asked her teacher about this?

I understand the teacher made a blanket/statement announcement to the class about this policy. Does your daughter have a habit of skipping class, excessively asking for passes, or getting into trouble? If she doesn’t, I doubt the teacher will flat out tell her no she can’t go if your daughter needs to and asks her privately on occasion.

I would advise her to respect the policy to the best of her ability. Then leave this alone until she is personally denied use of the bathroom if there comes a time when she needs it.

If some kids are skipping class, then better monitoring and larger deterrents are need to curb that behavior. It is wild how many adults are willing to accept the casual carceral organization of school life. Wild.

No. And I'm a lawyer. Even judges will break to let people use the bathroom. I would never even consider working somewhere that restricted my bathroom use. I cannot imagine any sane adult would.

Hahaha back when I was a teacher, my bathroom use was very restricted. It goes with the territory of the job. I guess teaching would not be for you.

Well, I'm making the choice for ME in that situation. And no, that would not be something I'd likely to sign up for. But for the kids at the mercy of the teacher and who need to use the bathroom, are self conscious, etc. they should be allowed to go as needed.

When I was in middle school and high school, we had 4 minutes of “passing time” between classes. If your next class was on the other side of the school, you needed that time to walk there, but most classes were fairly close together, so that was when I changed pads/tampons. And so did everyone else I know. That was when you were supposed to do things like go to the bathroom, get water, go to your locker, etc. So most teachers were unwilling to have you use the bathroom during class, which made perfect sense to me.

Am I missing something here? What’s changed?

Backpacks aren’t allowed to be carried. Kids have to use those 5 minutes to swap out books/supplies plus factor in the travel time. There’s not time. When DD was in MS, she carried 3 classes worth of materials, her water bottle, and her lunch because her locker was so far away from her classes. This was because in honors classes she had to travel to the upper grade area for her classes but her locker was in the 6th grade area.

By the time she stood in the line to use the bathroom & was her hands for lunch, she had 12 mins to eat. She’d then have to rush from the cafeteria back to her locker to swap out materials for her afternoon classes in the 6th grade area and rush back to her class in the 7th or 8th grade area.

I told her I’d she needed to use the restroom & a teacher said no, she could leave. Consequences be dammed.

My daughter just started on her period and is irregular. I’m only just learning about period underwear. I’m learning on this board that there might be issues with it and so is there any real truth to this? As we are gearing up for outdoor Ed I want to make sure I send her with the best possible tools to help her in case she starts a period while at camp.

Who knows what's true. We use Thinx modal boyshorts, but allegedly Bambody on Amazon was tested neg and is another option.

What size for an average 11 year old?

Adults aren’t goofing off in bathrooms and vaping, doing drugs, or making out.

Are these your kids? If so, stop pawning off the consequences of your bad parenting on the school disciplinary system. If not, unclench.

What message are we sending about setting girls up for academic success if their mental energy is spent on project managing period logistics? It is absolutely not “natural,” it’s a gender discrimination issue.

Anonymous wrote:It’s a real problem. Last year, my 8th grader’s school implemented a rule that students couldn’t go to the restroom during the first or last 10 minutes of any class. DD often couldn’t go to the restroom during a class when there was a test given because she couldn’t be sure to have enough time to complete the test. She might finish the test with 5-10 minutes left in the class…but then she wouldn’t be allowed to go to the restroom until 10 minutes into the next class, and if there was a test in the next class also, oh well, she’d have to wait until lunch. It’s not fair that they place restrictions on everyone because of a few kids who abuse restroom access.

This. Same issue at our MS and I agree that it’s unfair to punish all kids for the misbehavior of some.

Our DD wears adult size large/10 and wears large Thinx Air briefs, but XL Thinx boyshorts. Thinking about trying Bambody briefs instead because the Thinx Air just aren't absorbent enough, but the Thinx Boyshorts are great for all day.
