FCPS kids going out of state

How does your kid get these merit scholarships? Does the school help students with this? Sorry, I'm new at this...

If your FCPS kid went to a public/private out of state, what was the thinking behind it? DD wants to live “somewhere other than VA” which we get but VA has so many great schools that it is tough to think about paying twice as much to go elsewhere (we are full pay but have other kids as well).

My son really liked Purdue and the out of state cost was about $5k more a year at the time and was worth it for us. He also benefited when they did not raise tuition for the entire time attended.

Similarly, WM is the most expensive state school, but you keep the tUition you go in with, even if it’s raised for future classes. Very nice, when my other kids is goIng up 2-3% a Year.

Actually depends on the school chosen at UVA. W&M tuition and fees about $24k.
At UVA:
A&S: Y1 and 2=$18k; 3 and 4=$21k
Commerce and Public Polcy: Y3 and 4=$29k
Engineering: Y1-4=$28k, $27k, $26k, $24k

Good point! Which OOS schools would you suggest adding to the list for merit?

Same here! DC wanted Virginia Tech so badly but didn’t get in. VT has everything DC was looking for. Zero interest in UVA or W&M, so went OOS. Also thinking about trying to transfer.

This was new to me as well! In our experience, the merit scholarships were managed by the Admissions Office, and in several cases they were based on my DC's grades. Many advertise the merit scholarships. Here are some links as examples:

Can you share which schools?

My kid with slightly lower stats was waitlisted at VA Tech for engineering
Applied EA. Maybe should have applied ED. Didn't apply to GMU so went out of state.

Why "should" he have had a shot? Plenty of other kids have those stats and higher. No one is owed admission anywhere.

Our DC isn’t applying to a single in-state VA school. They’re all so inferior. Does the DCUM crowd really think these schools are in the same league as MIT, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale?!?! All schools to which my DC will apply and get accepted, to be sure.

Sounds like a great plan!

This has to be a joke. Good one 😀

+2 Same for my DC. Loved UVA but was rejected. Is now at an out of state private costing us $82,000 a year. Ouch.

How much is the “real” cost of an out of state school?

UCLA eg lists the price at $68K per year. Is that what I should plan for?? Based on our income level we wont qualify for any breaks

DC is a freshman at TJ and was trying to plan in case kid decides to go to an OOS school, as there is a good chance DC doesnt get into UVA or VT from TJ due to competition etc.

Thank you for posting! I’m begging my DC to apply to UK and now I can back it up with $$. She would qualify for $14k a year (plus $10k for DC tag). Now all she needs to do is write the three prompts.
