Is Your School Changing Its Name?

If they are choosing to rename Richard Montgomery HS, I would assume that Montgomery County will also be renamed at some point.

MLK was a serial adulterer. Time to get rid of his name I guess.

No. Adultery is fine. Women are disposable. Slave-owners are the problem.

Unless it's rape, adultery is consensual.

Adultery is consensual? No, I do not consent to my husband sleeping with other people.

Most of the times, the wife of an adulterer does not consent to her spouse sleeping around.

Thank you for framing it that way. No man (or woman) is an island.

Look guys, he switched from “right wingers” to “far-right shills.” It’s the third one I’ve read today….

What about the children of serial adulterers? It’s stressful to be in a family where one parent is always cheating.

DP. What does this have to do with schools possibly changing names? There is no one is proposing renaming MLK MS.

MCPS' BoE doesn't have that authority.

It’s fascinating that anyone who holds a different opinion is assumed to be “right wing.” As if liberals can’t have a variety of viewpoints.

I loved President Obama but when they started naming schools after him a shook my head. Who knows what the future holds and what standards they’ll have in 75 years. Then will be drama and renaming. Just call it twin Pines school or deep lake high school.

Wasn’t Obama late on same-sex marriage? And I’m sure he misgendered a bunch of people. Sweep him into the dustpan of history!

He wasn't one of the hundreds honored during the confederate monument movement in an attempt to rewrite history.

Why not just drop the Colonel Zadok. Call school Magruder. There is no need to spend thousands of dollars changing it. Can still achieve purpose of no longer tying history to an individual that owned slaves. I say same this with Blair and change Richard Montgomery to just Montgomery High School. Let’s not waste any more money on this.

Why not act like adults and teach kids that no person is perfect and that we can admire one set of accomplishments in a person, while not saluting all of their behavior? Why not teach kids historical context and let them know that the society that they enjoy today, with the freedom to criticize everything was built on the willingness of people to challenge one part of their society back then? Maybe you would have challenged slavery, but they challenged monarchy. Without them risking their lives, the world could look a lot differently now. People who look back and apply their values have poor education in historical thinking and content knowledge about the state of the world at that time.

Once John Poole gets changed, I’m sure their will be pressure to change Poolesville too. If you are against the renaming and you speak about it publicly you could lose your job etc. You can’t win unless you are pro naming a school after a person who is part of a minority group.

At this point, how many people really know who John Poole really is? It’s just a name.

Renaming Blair is absurd.

I can see renaming schools like Lee since that guy was a traitor who fought for slavery, but the rest seem like a bit much. Anyway, I'm all for removing confederates from the schools but we're going a bit overboard here. Maybe save the $$$ and use it for things like teachers.

A lot of this is absurd.

Poolesville HS isn't really named after Poole. It's named after the town, which is named after the Poole brothers (John and Joseph), according to Wiki. I don't see the HS name changing, even eventually.

Richard Montgomery didn't own the slaves. His wife's family did. I do think this name will change because he's guilty by association.

Montgomery Blair.... Sigh. I would not be surprised if this name changes because people are idiots.

We live in Poolesville and my husband said that the article is wrong the John Poole didn’t own slaves but his father did. If we are going back and renaming everything because of people’s families then maybe we should create one exception and call Oedipus High School. All families have black sheep.

That's true, but when "liberals" are espousing far-right talking points, it's a strong indication they're not actually liberal.
