| I don't mind renaming schools, but, let's quit naming schools after people. Very few people stand up to the scrutiny of time. |
|
You know, I'm typically on the side of righting historical wrongs no matter the cost, but several of the folks on that list are absolutely insane inclusions.
Montgomery Blair, an avowed abolitionist who represented Dredd Scott in front of the Supreme Court? Yeah, we can keep that name even if Blair's extended family did enslave people. His family can rot in hell, but he did the right thing against massive societal (and likely familial) pressure. Isn't that what we want to celebrate? |

Magruder parent here, and I hope not. He is honored because of his status in the Revolutionary War and as one of the founders of Montgomery County. Not because of slave ownership. He wasn't one of the hundreds honored during the confederate monument movement in an attempt to rewrite history.

| I'm curious if the survey is going to just those currently at the school, or also to those at the school's feeders? What about alumni? |
| (grabs popcorn) Oh, boy! More culture war! |
I don't know about school feeders but alumni are mentioned: Students, parents/guardians and families, staff, and alumni are invited to attend an information meeting for your school to learn about the Montgomery County Board of Education’s updated school-naming policy. Information sessions are being held in six school communities to inform community members about the updated policy, the research about the school’s name, and the process to submit a petition to ask the Board to start the renaming process. Stupid and inmoral. This guy deserves more recognition, not less: "Montgomery Blair, born in May 1813 in Kentucky, served as a U.S. district attorney and mayor of St. Louis, Missouri. Blair represented Dred Scott, an African American man who petitioned for freedom from slavery. He served in the Maryland House of Delegates in the late 1870s. Blair took an “anti-slavery” political stance, but his family was known to own slaves. He died in July 1883 in Silver Spring." |
MLK was a serial adulterer. Time to get rid of his name I guess. |
I agree! |
That article is two years old. Has anything happened since then? |
The OP said the initial emails to the community members were just sent out recently. |
| From now on, all schools will be named for the only person to ever live a perfect, sinless life: Jesus Christ. |
No. Adultery is fine. Women are disposable. Slave-owners are the problem. |
+1 I loved President Obama but when they started naming schools after him a shook my head. Who knows what the future holds and what standards they’ll have in 75 years. Then will be drama and renaming. Just call it twin Pines school or deep lake high school. |
The letters would absolutely be offended, not to mention the special characters. |
