Is Your School Changing Its Name?

I’m sure people will eventually find a reason to be offended by numbers as well

Some ethnic groups don't like certain numbers, like 4 or 13. I will advocate for numbers, but only if it is as long as a credit card number.

“Where is your son going to school?”
“Oh, he can’t decide between 4698 7478 7532 2098 and 6520 0174 2995 3720. Not sure why he didn’t consider 7622 1009 3855 2281 but it’s his choice.”

I don't mind renaming schools, but, let's quit naming schools after people. Very few people stand up to the scrutiny of time.

I was on the naming committee for a new elementary school in MCPS several years ago. We were presented with 6 names for the school: all 6 were names of people. Our committee had this exact discussion. That conversation was met with charges of racism because all the names were minorities, so there were accusations that "white people on this committee will do anything to prevent a school from being named for a black person." There was still a push to name the school after something other than a person, but it was shut down. There was no choice but to pick from the list supplied by MCPS. I would advise against volunteering for any naming committee; it is a waste of time, just let MCPS pick from their predetermined list.

MLK was a serial adulterer. Time to get rid of his name I guess.

No. Adultery is fine. Women are disposable. Slave-owners are the problem.

Unless it's rape, adultery is consensual.

Adultery is consensual? No, I do not consent to my husband sleeping with other people.

Most of the times, the wife of an adulterer does not consent to her spouse sleeping around.

OP here

Ah, thanks! I hadn't seen that list.

Probably because it's a couple years old and they haven't done anything.

Just another troll post to stir people up over nothing...

The far-right shills are on a real tear today, dredging up all these non-issues.

The letters would absolutely be offended, not to mention the special characters.

NYC did just fine with numbers.

What has politics have to do with this? That is weird.

This was from a couple years ago and never went anywhere. Wonder why this is being dug up now?

Seems like someone just unearthed an issue from a few years ago to stir up trouble. It's the usual wedge issue nonsense so definitely political.

NP here.

This article, from Oct 9, 2022, says meetings will begin in October. It is consistent with OP's language that he/she had gotten an email.

There is also a reference to BOE action in June 2022 regarding "Naming School Facilities".

Ask MCPS and the BOE. We just got the email this week about beginning the name change process at our high school. I have no idea why MCPS is choosing to pursue this now, considering all the other issues our school system is currently facing.

This would be something that would be a much lower priority.
