OP, I would absolutely dispute any charge for use of a house that is unusable, regardless of any contract of adhesion you may have signed. It they can provide the premises described in the agreement/listing, then they are in breach, not you.

OP doesn’t know the unit is unusable. She just wants to cancel now for a rental next week in case it is unusable at that point.

There is not one single residence on the island with electricity or running water. GMAB.

They are bringing in crews from out of state to help with repairs, and power has already been restored to 25% of the affected area. It’s entirely possible the unit will have power and water by next week.

Non locals aren’t allowed on the island, so it is unusable.

Funny , I am wondering how power has restored if the road is out. How did they get the trucks over to the island?

Is it a blanket VRBO contract or is it different for each property?

The entire island is under a 24 hour curfew, they don't even want you on the island in your own home. The National Guard is checking IDs, you either need a DL with a Sanibel address or a "hurricane pass". They're allowing residents to come back today until 7pm, but then they have to leave and the 24 hr curfew is back. So stop with your bs about how it might be up and running next week. Can you even read?

They're using barges.

HaHa!! I kinda doubt it. Provide a source for your claim.

Last story I just read from yesterday say FPL hasn't even sent their surveyors on the island yet. If you had a clue about power systems, you would realize that is the first step. The National Guard is supposed to be flying the power companies first responders in and they have not given FPL the go ahead yet.

There may be some kind of act of God line in your contract. That being said tell them your next call is to local media and it’s their move. They are a corporation exploiting a natural disaster.

Again this--if the contract includes a "no cancellation or no refund upon cancellation" policy, then that is the contract and I would interpret that the owner is not in breach of it. If OP booked with that knowledge at the time of booking, then, I'm not sure what wiggle room they have, short of Acts of God, etc as others have pointed out.

Really unfortunate for the OP, but, this is why we (the royal we) do our due diligence and read fine print and contemplate booking vacations during hurricane season.

Give me a break! OP literally cannot go to this house. There is no way to get there. That whole area of Florida is decimated. There is zero way to fulfill that contract - and OP should not bear the loss, obviously! "No cancellations" doesn't mean "if a storm makes my house literally inaccessible during the time you are supposed to be here, tough titties." It means if OP's kid gets sick that week and she wants to cancel, she can't. This is an act of Gd. There is literally nothing OP could do to use the house she intended to rent. The owner has insurance and will be made whole. Perhaps even has business interruption insurance. They can't just squeeze OP for a couple thousand dollars over a no cancellation clause.

VRBO should clearly allow OP to cancel, regardless of this house's particular cancellation policy.

What do you think it's likely to be like now

Has the owner told OP that the house is in great shape and she's going to have a wonderful vacation next week, even though she has literally no way to access the island?

Huh? How else do you think they’re getting the heavy equipment out to Sanibel or Pine? There are several reports re this, but I guess you’re too lazy to google. This is from 2 days ago. https://twitter.com/smithjuliec/status/1577028150541762560?s=46&t=SRezNDq3IT9UdjRxHUS9Qw

Twitter is not a legit source. A small pickup is not heavy equipment. And that's a Verizon truck with a picture that could have been taken anywhere. Not an FPL bucket truck.

This isn't OP's fault, this isn't the owner's fault. I think they should refund half.
