Is Florida part of the South?

Clewiston, one of the most deep south feeling places I have ever been to was in South/Central Florida.

It’s where I’m from. There is a mix of everything here. South Florida has a Cuban feel, in a really awesome way.

+1. Spot on
99% of the Floriduh Florida man stuff is in central florida.

Florida man stuff??

Allow me to introduce you to Florida Man... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Man

I just read about a "Florida Man" missing who tried to ride his jet ski to the Bahamas. Genius.

Classic Florida Man

I'm from Florida and sorry but a classic Florida Man story must include an alligator, probably in the context of a drunken bet to wrestle it

It was turning blue, but the Cubans took a sharp turn to the right last election. Those forecasts of Florida being solidly dem have been revised - I think the blue wave they expected from formerly ineligible to vote felons and newcomers didn’t materialize as much as they expected, and the Cuban shift caught them by surprise. It will be red for a while longer at least.

Cubans were always red because of the Cuban adjustment act Cubans have “open borders” and “others” don’t. They have long been told in Spanish TV that Democrats are socialists like Castro and will bring more “Mexicans”.

If you wanna get shot call a Cuban a Mexican, they are super racist against “other” Hispanics.

Sure, you keep telling yourself that.

and the Mexicans in places like the Rio Grande Valley in Texas that have swung sharply to the right in recent elections- are they racist against...themselves? lol

As the late great Tom Petty, a noted Floridian sang, "There's a Southern accent where I come from. The youngins call it country, the yankees call it dumb."

There's a huge anti-South prejudice on DCUM and in DC generally. I've been told I can't be from the South because: "but, you're so educated . . . and nice." And (unspoken) liberal.

What a lot of bigots with no self-awareness Washingtonians are.

yes, the "gets more northern the further south you go" comments don't account for inland South/Central Florida which is VERY southern. Well, Orlando less so but once you get 15-20 miles out of Orlando you feel Deep South for sure. Sebring, Lakeland, Clewiston, Lake Wales, Arcadia, etc....all feel like rural Georgia or something. These are also prime "Florida man" areas

FL is more south now than during Civil War. Just look at what they are doing.

DP, but Christianity and machismo can help explain the rightward shift in Mexican Americans. As for the Cubans, I agree that they think they are superior to other Hispanics.

This.

BS. Born and raised in FL. It depends. Along the bigger cities, it feels less southern. But outside of these areas, it is a truly southern city. And I mean southern in terms of architecture, landscape, cuisine, etc. People need to read more Florida history. It was a territory that was overtaken by Spain and France in the past. It has rich native american and spanish culture/remnants and now a good portion of latino culture in SoFL.

It has underwater caves, a coral reef, amazing and unparallel beaches, and so much native wildlife. If you don't like it, stay away!

Are you from the nature coast? They have a decent novel set there.

"Cubans don't vote Democrat because they are racist, especially against Mexicans!!" "Well Mexicans are quickly swinging right too, especially in areas like the RGV...what about them?" "Oh, well, they're Christian and machisimo?" Always want to make some excuse about what's wrong with XYZ group to not vote Dem...never looking inwards and thinking...maybe the it's the party itself that needs to change?

Florida is a southern state. South Florida feels far more Latin than southern these days, but don't forget that Miami was a hotbed of Jim Crow segregation for years.

+1. Not just central Florida and the panhandle, but I would also throw in Melbourne and the "space coast" area. My extended family is from there. It is very Southern.
