Is Florida part of the South?

North Florida has a lot of rednecks. South Florida has a lot of Latinos. And central Florida has a lot of retired people with New Jersey / New York / Michigan accents.

I'm on the gulf coast near the hurricane. Former upstate New Yorker, then DC, then Florida. My neighbors (all of whom are friends) and closest friends are: Bethesda, California, northern Virginia, Bend Oregon, Georgetown DC, Miami cuban, LA, Boulder, UK, Minnesota, California...and a handful of local born and raised. My husband was raised on the gulf coast of Florida and it was redneck then (in the 80s) even though it was a lot of New Yorkers and texans. But in our circles, it is very liberal.

Great area. Relieved to see you were spared the worst there.

FL is turning purple with all the transplants. When it turns blue they will start a Civil War before they believe it.

Yes. I live near Tampa and actually just spent the day in St Pete yesterday. I have a co worker who was raised 'up north' as he calls it meaning North Florida and he says it's a different world up there.

Florida Man is a thing but frequently in those stories, you find the man is origionally from NY or Michigan-seems like always those states!

It was turning blue, but the Cubans took a sharp turn to the right last election. Those forecasts of Florida being solidly dem have been revised - I think the blue wave they expected from formerly ineligible to vote felons and newcomers didn’t materialize as much as they expected, and the Cuban shift caught them by surprise. It will be red for a while longer at least.

It’s not that the Cubans turned right (they were already there), but that the Venezuelans joined them. And to a lesser extent, Puerto Rican service industry workers in Osceola County.

Cubans were always red because of the Cuban adjustment act Cubans have “open borders” and “others” don’t. They have long been told in Spanish TV that Democrats are socialists like Castro and will bring more “Mexicans”.

If you wanna get shot call a Cuban a Mexican, they are super racist against “other” Hispanics.
