I have heard that on the boys' side, the A teams are generally mostly kids who play AAU on the Nova Cavs, and very hard to make.

Well the coach also coaches the nova cavs so there may be some truth, but if your kid is good enough they will take him. The coach will probably also try to recruit him to the nova cavs.

What age group? Bc the 5th (now 6th grade) Nova Cavs coach has several Vienna players he will coach (or coached last year) this winter

Vienna players moving to play for Reston?

The closest team to us is Gum Springs, but they don't seem to have very many teams or an updated website. Anyone know about them?

Are there any private leagues out there that we can join that don't care about zip code and doesn't have dad coaching? It's very political and you have to be buddy buddy with the short coach or his short little plumpy unathletic kid. We don't have many options for zip codes and I just want my kid to play competitively without all the drama and butt kissing.

What is a standard FCYBL cost? I've seen from $350-$450.
This is 3x-5x more than just playing rec--can anyone whose gone from rec to FCYBL comment on their thoughts about that price point and if they thought the experience was worth it over just doing rec? thanks

Some leagues have it as low as $175.
Around $300 is more standard (including uniform).
CYA I know is on the high end-around $475 with the uniform

Literally every AAU team doesn't care less about zip codes. That's unique to FCYBL.

Higher costs (Speaking for Arlington Travel basketball) due to longer season...
Gym time -- practice 1.5 hours 3 times per week through Nov then twice per week through February; Full court; Rec only practices once per week for one hour
Full uniform plus practice shirts
More games (at least 15)
Refs for games

YES definitely worth it if your DC makes a team! It will be great experience just before AAU season (tryouts) kicks off in spring.

It’s better than rec if you want your kid to get prepared for the next level. Even 450 isn’t bad for a 4-5 month season. Some AAU Teams will charge you $200-$500 per month.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Our kid does two other sports--one three seasons out of the four and one is fall and spring, but our kid is above rec level for bball. But we are not looking to do bball beyond the winter season/not looking for AAU, so maybe select isn't the way to go. Seems like we may be taking someone else's spot. We'll just go clean up in the rec league instead.

Rec League isn’t that bad as you will find all sorts of levels playing there. Our AAU player supplements with Rec League. It’s the same for baseball. Many times it is the same Coach.

If your kid wants to play in high school, do travel. If not, do rec.

Just play up a year in rec. if your kid is that good, leagues will let you. Then he will have some challenge.

You don't need to do county through. My kid plays on an aau team that practices year round and does the occasional off season tournament. They also plays rec. The local county team is daddy coached and a disaster we don't want to be part of.

+1. But I suggest losing the comment that he will "go clean up in rec." lots of good players in rec and frankly it makes you sound like a tool.
