Unpopular driving opinions?

People over estimate their driving abilities, are unfamiliar with design spec and capabilities of their car, trust other drivers, and roads conditions. The majority of people do not even do a quick visual inspection of their cars before drive. Specially people who speed.

I agree, but I find this is pretty much what people do in cities/larger metro areas. They don't do this in more rural areas.

I don’t consider myself merge police, but I do think there’s a way to be a zipper-merge teacher, which is to go just slowly enough in the lane that is ending to create a good long train behind my car that will then generate the steady zipper merge that the traffic gods intended. This also is less irksome to any bumpkins in the other lane who don’t understand zipper merges, since I’m not flying by them.

If you're not actively looking for windows, then you're going to wait forever - and you kind of deserve to.

Prius drivers don't care about opening their car doors into yours.

If you are pulling into traffic you need to accelerate to match the flow of traffic.

Because those cars are ugly so they don't care if it gets dinged and scratched up

People in DC metro area are some of the worst drivers and don’t understand 4 way stops. I nearly got t-boned yesterday by someone who decided they had the right of way even though a car from their direction just went and I was the next car clockwise.

People are idiots. I’ve never had to use my horn as much as I have had to driving here

Cars with a ton of "safety" features make people worse drivers. They don't develop real skills or spatial awareness.

It makes the drivers zone out, instead of constantly checking their mirrors and being aware of their surroundings.

Or maybe it’s just the mobile devices.

No. Those sensors that tell you when it's ok/not ok to change lanes, are horrible. Nobody should rely on them. Those features make people inept drivers. But yes, using your phone - even a hands free phonecall - makes people space out.

As a passenger, I'd MUCH rather be in a car with someone going 15 over, but focused on the road (and mirrors) than someone going speed limit, but on a hands free phonecall. As a passenger, you can totally tell that it affects their road awareness.

If you’re from the city not used to driving in the country slow the f down, keep your distance, don’t go more than 5-8 miles over the speed limit during the day, and pay attention to the curve ahead signs.

If you’re driving at night in the country do the speed limit and watch out for deer and other animals, they don’t care that you’re in a hurry. Especially during “Bambi season”, rut season, and hunting season (May-December). And if you do hit a deer throw it in your pickup truck and call it dinner (report it of course). If that’s too much for you to handle at least call 911 or non-emergency services so someone can come collect it and process it.

I hate seeing deer rotting on the side of the road because someone was so selfish that they couldn’t pick up the phone. You don’t have to do any anything else but call and go about your day. As long as it’s a fresh kill there are many places that process it for free and give it to food banks or families in need. Nothing irks me more than seeing 75-100 pounds of wasted meat when there are food banks with barely enough food to serve all the hungry people.

I wasn’t aware country folk don’t speed. Good to know the next time Cletus in his lifted F150 tailgates me for two miles before making an illegal pass in a double yellow marked zone while I drive 5 miles over the limit.

The drunk ones do, they also end up dead in ditches.

Nah, if I try to do this where I live someone will pull out and block traffic in the closing lane.

I wholeheartedly agree, except that apparently cars behind me perceive them as a reason to speed up so I can’t change lanes. I hate driving here.

Of course this doesn't apply to you but if a road bully in their enormous truck / SUV whatever is trying to jam in front of me in my tiny car when the road behind me is wide open, then yep better believe I'm speeding up. I'm enjoying actually being able to see the road today, thanks.
