As a teacher I kinda agree with this. You won’t need much at the start of the year anyway, and you’ll be surprised at how much of what your ordering now you won’t need. The first week of school lots of vet teachers are decluttering their rooms and will be happy to give you this stuff. I know you have great intentions but take this vets advice to relax, deep breaths, and have a drink

It’s summer!

This comment is asinine.

Some of you have clearly never taught in underfunded schools.

Ive taught in title 1 schools since 2012, ranging from hs to lower ES. The amount of crates I have filled with “essential” junk would fill a uhaul. Instead it just allows me to make excuses when the in-laws what to use my guest room

DP, ES teacher for almost 30 years.
Really though, why should school districts provide the supplies if the employees will buck up and provide them? The teachers are enabling the district.

I've heard this before. Teachers shouldn't buy supplies or anything cause then the district has no reason to purchase them. Here's the thing: If teachers and parents don't buy stuff, the district isn't going to cave and then purchase what is needed or wanted. I don't know if they don't care or just close their eyes. But I've been in different districts and different schools and what the district provides is pathetic. We are never going to shame or force districts into doing the right thing. And as a veteran teacher, and a human, I want my students to have all the advantages my OWN children have.

She creates and shares the list. Now she is being questioned as to why she needs all the things on the list. I hope none of you are complaining about the teacher shortage.

Good luck to you OP. I'm hoping you get great things and have a wonderful year!!!

The only questions I see get to the same point that many have made already. OP should be careful not to over-plan and clutter. The advice is solid. I don't think anyone on this thread doesn't wish OP all the best.

Make a chart a week by copying a poem, a song, or whatever you’re using to teach. Laminate it and hang it after you’re done using it. The walls will be covered by conferences. If anyone complains about the lack of cuteness, point out that you want less distracting devot to help students focus.

Save some space on your walls for places to display student work. Parents love to see their students' work on conference day!

Op here, I am not worrying about decorations at all, just basic supplies and things I will need in the classroom daily.

I'm the +10000 and she was told on another post to make it and then she does and gets told she won't need all that stuff.

Op here again, I saw where a couple of you purchased some things, thank you much, I appreciate it more than you know!

Why are schools not giving teachers at least $500 to start their classrooms?

OP, did you try sharing with your school’s PTA? Parents may help out. I know the PTA president at my kids’ school has shared wishlists in the past. As a parent, I prefer to donate to the school that way vs a general fundraiser - it feels good knowing where my money’s going. Good luck!

How do we know this teacher is actually using the money for school supplies?

You think OP is going to resell post-it notes for cash? That seems like a poorly thought out get rich scheme.

Once, a terrible principal was mad about all the teachers leaving. She sent out an email saying that she would come by to make sure you didn't take anything that belonged to the school before you left. Besides the furniture, I had a stapler that was in the room when I got there.

I think it seems really crazy to people working normal jobs that you do not get ANY supplies to do your job. This is a reality for teachers.

The quotes got messed up.

I was a first year teacher last year, and my room was completely empty. I bought a pocket calendar, and a few other basic office supplies and that was it because that's all I could afford.I also had the mindset that if the school wanted me to have it, they would provide it. I struggled so much. I didn't have games or puzzles for indoor recess, or any math manipulatives for small groups. I didn't even have enough classroom books to put in their book bins. The behaviors in my classroom were terrible because I didn't have enough resources to keep them engaged.

Did you even click on the link? No one who isn't a teacher wants to buy glue sticks and erasers in bulk.
