First Year Teacher UpdateL I created a wish list

You should sign up for instantink. Much cheaper than buying cartridges separately. And I entirely disagree with people up-thread about colored printing. Sometimes you need to print in color!

OP I work with new teachers, have some teaching supplies I could donate and am happy to help if you can share an email address. Are you in DC?

Hahahaha. My school gives us $50/year to buy everything we could possibly need, including supplies for our students like pencils, paper and crayons. They lock up office supplies so we don't steal them.

The amount of money available to teachers varies wildly by state, district and school.

Yup, we get a 75$ office depot card. This year, half of them were expired for unknown reasons. Admin said they would replace them, but didn't.

As a teacher I kinda agree with this. You won’t need much at the start of the year anyway, and you’ll be surprised at how much of what your ordering now you won’t need. The first week of school lots of vet teachers are decluttering their rooms and will be happy to give you this stuff. I know you have great intentions but take this vets advice to relax, deep breaths, and have a drink

It’s summer!

This comment is asinine.

Some of you have clearly never taught in underfunded schools.

Ive taught in title 1 schools since 2012, ranging from hs to lower ES. The amount of crates I have filled with “essential” junk would fill a uhaul. Instead it just allows me to make excuses when the in-laws what to use my guest room

Wanted to add - not saying this to be a jerk…in many ways I was OP. I’m just sharing my experience.

DP, ES teacher for almost 30 years.
Really though, why should school districts provide the supplies if the employees will buck up and provide them? The teachers are enabling the district.

I posted about not needing color. I’ve been texting for about 25 years but it’s all been at the secondary level. Why would you need to print in color in elementary school?

To OP- I personally would not but a lot of the things on your list. If you can get it donated, great, but I have used milk crates and so many supplies from the Dollar Tree and Walmart that are less expensive and more practical. Often people are getting rid of furniture and things in the school during the first week as they move rooms. I would get free things that way before buying anything.

NP- don't you get a $250 deduction off your taxes too?

6 pages of people telling this young teacher to create a wish or donors choose site because so many people would be willing to donate.

She creates and shares the list. Now she is being questioned as to why she needs all the things on the list. I hope none of you are complaining about the teacher shortage.

My kid teachers ask for office supplies donation, amazon wishlist and snack donations/end of year celebration donations throughout the school year and no one reports to the school. I think our school district does not allow teachers to do so, but so what, parents do not mind chipping in if they could.

In fairness I posted on the OG thread and told the teacher to relax there as well

You are obnoxious and unhelpful. OP doesn't need tired old teachers telling her not to care.

OP said said she will be teaching in a title 1 school, often those kids don’t even come to school with supplies the first day of school. I taught in a title 1 school in Kentucky and even if students were given supplies through a backpack program they wouldn’t show up with the supplies at school. Some would sale them, others they would simply get lost before school started.
