Should we let republicans run local DC government as an experiment?

Yes, there are issues, like there are in every American city, but we also like bodily choice and "social safety net" services the city offers.

Also remember, DC is both a city and a state in terms of the functions it performs. The best way to fix the problems is to simply grant statehood, carving out the federal core.

Yeah, the D.C. budget is in excellent shape, and crime -- while rising -- is still lower than it was for most of the last 30 years. What exactly makes you think local government here is a failure, OP?

And in Ft Worth they probably have more guns than DC.

This is such a bullsh*t democrat argument, because Ft. Worth has a much lower baseline of murder compared to DC. If murders rise in Ft. Worth by a little bit, the percent change will look drastic because of a smaller baseline. Meanwhile, DC can see a much larger number of murders in terms of raw numbers, but the percent change will be smaller compared to Ft. Worth specifically because the denominator for DC is so much higher. DC has way higher number of murders per capita than Ft. Worth because you actually normalized the data in a meaningful way rather than comparing a crappy stat like YoY percent change.

When Tony Williams was mayor of DC. He proved that Republican city governance can work.

He was a Democrat. What the hell are you on?

Jacksonville, FL is pretty crime ridden too and run by a Republican. But I know the talking point there that many Republicans wish they could say:

"There's alot of poor black people and poor black people = high crime"

A republican would likely crack down on crime, disincentive homelessness, and look for ways to reduce taxes and fees.

No they won't lol. Omaha, NE has homeless issues and so does Ft. Worth.

And let them shut down abortion clinics in the city? No thanks.

Not PP, but he was a technocrat. And very appealing to moderates on both sides. As a moderate to the rght - I adored him. We need more like him.

We are Democrats at the national level but in a heartbeat would vote for a moderate Republican candidate for the DC council or as mayor.

Like who, Hogan?

He's a guy who many bring up as a sane, "moderate" Republican, and even he has no business touching DC with a ten-foot pole.

Larry Hogan, along with Charlie Baker in MA, are two moderate Republican governors in Democratic states that are consistently ranked among the most popular nationally. We could do a lot worse than Larry Hogan.

I think a fiscally conservative, socially liberal Republican could get votes in DC. There are lots of wealthy people here who would like lower taxes and some who would be open to a little variety on the council. Give us statehood and then try to earn the votes versus just blocking people’s right to representation. I voted for Schwarz and Catania over the years.

Talk about damning with faint praise.

Hogan truly is nothing special, he just looks the part when comparing him to other Republican governors. In kowtowing to his rural base, he put the kibosh on a much-needed transit line in Baltimore and hit the pause button on the Purple Line, unnecessarily causing years of delays and costing the state billions; I'd call him a penny wise, pound foolish Republican, but that would just be redundant.

The guy has such a miniscule backbone that he wrote in Ronald Reagan in 2020. Wow, such a pragmatic moderate! Pathetic.
