+1. If your kid wants to be an accountant or CPA there is no need for a big-time business program

Important if the student decides against majoring in accounting after taking a couple of accounting courses.

This is what I’m afraid of with my college daughter who’s an Accounting major. She’s in a good college, large public instate but it’s not a Wall Street feeder. I’m hoping she stays on the accounting track.

Accountants are in such high demand, you can pretty much go anywhere and get into a big 4 if your grades are good and you can self motivate/navigate the recruiting process.

+1

Also, UT admits some of the their top McCombs students into their integrated MPA program (Masters in Professional Accounting, for undergraduates interested in a BBA & MPA). It's often started toward end of the 4th year and into 5th year. These students have fantastic job outcomes in the accounting industry. Check out UT's MPA program.

Admission to UT McCombs from OOS is pretty tough, though.

ha, ha. I work for a mid size company and all the people in Accounting do look miserable. LOL.

No. There will be an accounting shortage.

+1. Many accountants are retirement age now, expected to lose something like 20% of current CPAs due to retirement soon.

I think it can depend on the type of accounting and the company. My DH is a tax accountant, self-employed, and loves it, planning to work forever. Where I'm in healthcare and I'm worn down, counting down the days until I can retire.

Some people want to be secured financial first, and enjoy their free time with hobbies and travel, etc.

Texas
UIUC
BYU
Indiana
Michigan

My CPA kid has worked in 2 accounting firms in Chicago with lots of Indiana U & U of Illinois accountants. They are reportedly no better than people who went to Loyola-Chicago, Michigan State, Northern Illinois, DePaul, or many other schools.

Once heard an expert say accounting is fascinating; it’s accountants that are boring. Accounting is similar to putting a very complicated jigsaw puzzle together—all the parts belong somewhere, & the challenge is finding exactly where.

Same here. In healthcare and if I was 18 again, I think I would choose accounting.

+1! Definitely. Some people want to be marketable immediately after college, start paying off student debt if they have any, or just be secure as PP stated and have time (and money!) to enjoy hobbies. Also, if they find accounting “boring” they can always branch off into other financial/business areas after a few years experience. Accounting is the backbone of businesses so it’s easier to move into other areas after some experience.
