Meghan Markle had had it with Hollywood—big-time. She’d just turned twenty-nine. It had been seven years since she’d graduated from the prestigious Northwestern University in Chicago with a double major in theater and international studies, and instead of being hailed as the next Angelina Jolie, she was stuck in the professional equivalent of Nowhere-stan.

Four years after her General Hospital debut, she was still hoofing it as one of twenty-six “briefcase girls” wearing a shimmery sateen minidress and gold stilettos on the NBC game show Deal or No Deal. The girls—all beauties, but none as vividly gorgeous as number twenty-four, Meghan Markle, with her blazing smile—were required to descend a neon-lit staircase en masse at the opening of the show to a raucous soundtrack of pelvic-thrusting electronic guitar music, and chorus “Hi, Howie!” at the rollicking game show barker Howie Mandel. The girl who opens the winning silver briefcase holding anywhere between one cent and a million dollars gets the most airtime. “I would end up standing up there forever in these terribly uncomfortable and inexpensive five-inch heels just waiting for someone to pick my number so I could go and sit down,” she has said.

Someone explain to me what’s so horrid about working hard in your chosen profession? Is it considered posh to make fun of people who might not find immediate success in their jobs? Feels terribly outdated.

I'm halfway through the article and Meghan sounds like everything we teach our kids to be: determined; hard-working; persistent; willing to sacrifice for her dream; etc. and she gets her big break via talent and hustle. What am I missing? Her blog also makes it seem like she was more thoughtful/astute than the average Hollywood wannabe.

I think this will be a huge best seller for Tina Brown. However, I also think it’s going to presage her decline as an influential journalist. The excerpts I’ve seen so far make Brown seem really unaware of the obvious racism encountered by Markle. Brown seems almost dismissive of it, and as a result comes across as out of touch and unaware.

I guess I don’t see why trying at something and failing is worth demonizing relentlessly. Yet, Kate having never developed a career at all and Camilla barely being a high school graduate are somehow superior.

Agree. I didn't get all the way through the article, but it sounded like she worked hard, hustled, and took every opportunity thrown her way. Good for her. We generally admire that sort of thing on this side of the pond.

Meghan openly talks about how difficult her life was at the palace (I think before the wedding). She says she asked the palace officials for mental health help and was denied. Their words were that "It wasn't done." I find this hard to believe. She wasn't a 19 year old Diana, she was a 30 something independent woman with money of her own. She never said that she went to Harry for help either. This doesn't make sense to me.

I'm the other PP who posted after reading part of the article and unknowingly wrote almost the same thing as this PP.

Okay, I read the whole thing now. I have the same reaction. I don't think any of this reflects badly on her. She wanted to be a big star, an influencer, someone with global recognition on the humanitarian front. She was ambitious. The horror!

We know, PP. The Black woman doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt in your world.

I’m just grateful Meghan didn’t end up harming herself like she said she thought about doing. I can’t imagine living around those hateful people for any length of time.

She sees through Meghan exactly how I see her.

I just read this whole excerpt and I don’t get it. What are we criticizing her for? She was ambitious at work? She liked SoHo house? She tried to do UN stuff? She wanted to meet Prince Harry? I just don’t see a villain. She seems like an ideal Duchess.

She is a vain status seeking social climber. She has her eye on global fame and was maneuvering towards that her whole life.

Not exactly the profile you want of someone who married into the monarchy of another country. It speaks to her true motivations. Fame and self aggrandizement.

+1. She’s living with a man while she’s openly advertising for a boyfriend who will promote her socially.

Isn't that exactly the profile you want of someone who would marry into the monarchy? Isn't that the whole point of the monarchy??

Okay that part was very questionable writing, but I can see why Tina Brown was grasping at straws. A) it's not at all clear what her relationship status was. B) she's very deliberately not quoted here. You can imagine a conversation that would technically support the reporting but wouldn't at match the shade.
British Lady Whose Dad Was Friends With Prince Charles: So Meghan, how's your chef boyfriend?
Meghan: Oh actually we had a huge fight before I left and we're kind of on a break. He's not interested in really committing.
BLWDWFWPC: LOL sounds like you need to meet a fabulous British celebrity while you're here and you can live in London!
Meghan: LOL. Totally. Let's go out tonight and make it happen! (sips PIMS)

I mean who among us hasn't had a conversation like that at a weekend dinner. We all have! Mine usually led to being drunk at Local 16, but you could have technically reported that I was "openly advertising for a boyfriend" if any of my friends from the dinner cared to talk to a reporter about it for some reason.

Arguably the real story of that story is that Prince Harry is lame and was hanging out a lot at SoHo house. If it was all vain social climbers, why was he there with his HRH?

I don't even like her! But she also seems fine! Arguably was very good at Princess-ing. I thought her wedding was lovely. I saw a clip where she made the queen giggle at some boring thing and that seemed good! I just don't get all the hate. I can't see any reason why she wasn't just as good/bad as any of the other royal women.

Exactly. I am trying to find he problem. She worked hard, practiced, networked, did the jobs others disdained and yet people are finding issue. Weird

Good lord woman. We get it from your point of view, "the firm is always helpful and do no wrong."
