shift change over. Yes really……

That seems like an MCPD problem rather than an MCPS problem.

Its both. They should have called the parents and had the girl transported to a hospital with a staff member.

Then you would say that MCPS is covering things up and that they should have waited for the police to come and interview the girl first.
The agenda cannot be any more obvious.

As a parent I'd expect to be called immediately. And, I would go to the school and if the police didn't show up promptly I'd take my child to the police station or hospital for help. If you take your child to the hospital, they are mandated reporters and have to call the police. There is no excuse for it taking that long for an officer to come.I couldn't care less if it was my child and they were covering it up as my priority is my child and getting them help. Sadly, not all kids have parents who can rush over or know what to do. I'd even do it if it was a child my child knew and my child or that child called asking for help. MCPS and the police failed this child.

Why was there no communication of a serious violent act on a MCPS school campus between Tuesday and Friday?

Was the accused student in class after Tuesday? What is being done to protect female students from this violent individual?

I also thought police officers were back into high schools after the Magruder shooting. Was that only for a week? 90 minutes to respond for a rape is terrible.

All good questions.

And why is MCPS not keeping our kids safe in school buildings?
if 2 17yo at olds decide to rendezvous in a bathroom in the basement how could mcps have prevented that?

+1 And when have you ever gave a good goddamn about what happens at Springbrook before Kevin Lewis told you it could help your SRO agenda?

I continually see these posts of people defending MCPS with the purpose to claim claim that they are helpless to protect the safety of the minors that are legally mandated in their care. It’s disturbing.

If a regular patrol officer responded in a timely way, there wouldn’t be an opportunity to stoke the SRO flames again. You really think cops give a damn if an assaulted kid has to wait if the wait means they can make a point to stick it to Will Jawando?

This is tiresome. Rest assured MCPD will still do their jobs because we have a very good police force. Yes, many are tired of Jawando’s unnecessary attacks on their honor and professionalism. That doesn’t change the fact they’ll do their jobs. Yes, the police care. If you don’t believe that, perhaps it’s time for you to do a ride-along or enroll in the citizen’s academy. Then you can meet some actual officers instead of listening to whatever social media decides to spew.

Do you understand a girl was assaulted (or raped) at a high school? Do you understand police did not do their job as this was covered up? Do you understand that the police aren't there within 5 minutes because MCPS didn't report it? MCPD cannot do their job if they don't have staff in the schools who work outside of MCPS to do what is best for our kids. Imagine the horror of those parents? Everyone here screams mental health issues. Now this is truly a mental health issue as this child will have long term issues because she was attacked at school and no one, NO ONE protected her. So, when you are screaming mental health and no SRO's because your Larlina cannot be at home with you as your homelife sucks, think of what has been done to this child.

I’m confused by your response. I’m not screaming against SROs as it is clear I am very supportive of our police. I want SROs and I’m pretty confident the response would have been immediate if the school was still staffed with one. And of course I understand the tragic nature of what happened. What I don’t understand is the comment above suggesting that police intentionally take extra time because they are mad at Jawando. That’s beyond absurd. I don’t know why it took 90 minutes because I’m not an officer, but I’m very confident the reason was NOT because they are mad at a local politician. You must think very poorly of police if you think they would intentionally make a teenage girl in trauma wait.

Who pays Jawando any mind but you? He’s a clown who wants his five minutes for fame. He’s a hypocrite and doesn’t care about anyone but himself. His kids aren’t even in mcps.

Because parents are more upset over masking than violence. Parents wanted the SRO's gone. Parents don't want police presence. MCPS doesn't have enough staff and they have rules that don't allow bathroom or locker room or other area monitoring.

So, why aren't MCPS and parents doing more to keep kids safe? Where is MCCPTA?

MCCPTA leaders are the puppets of MCPS and love people like Jill Ortman-Fouse. They sent out an official statement supporting the removal of SROs awhile back.
I'm on the PTA board at our school and our board, everyone of us hates MCCPTA.

This is typical for MCPS. Cover up and hope it doesn't hit the press. Kudos to the reporter for breaking this story.

Remember the Rockville HS alleged gang rape case a few years ago? The public only learned about it because MCPD (police) issued a press release about it. MCPS was silent about it, even to parents at that HS. If your child was at Rockville, wouldn't you want to know a gang rape may have taken place there earlier that week?

This is one of the reasons we moved to private last year.

These things happen at privates to and they cover it up as well.

This is BS. Provide a news article for a case where rape occurred on school property at a private school.

You obviously didn't read the article. MCPS called 911 and MCPD didn't get there until 90 minutes later.

Then, they should have done more. 90 minutes is unacceptable. They should have called the parents and an ambulance to transport her to the hospital. This makes no senses.

The school could have called SVID directly. This was rape.

The County Council needs to address the breakdown of basic community services. Both the Magruder case and now the Springbrook case shows a very slow response for incidents on school campuses.

when you call 911 for something like this you are asked if you need rescue/ambulance. I would assume the girl said no.

While they are at it, the council can also address the shortage of police officers that is mentioned in the article posted above. Perhaps they can evaluate what has led to MCPD’s retention and recruitment problems. More officers = quicker response times.

MCPS frankly has a dysfunctional relationship with the police and MCPS doesn’t seem to train their employees for what to do for serious violent incidents in schools despite these incidents are becoming more common. Montgomery County also seems to have an extreme shortage of police, EMT, and 911 operators that response times are unacceptable.

This was rape of a minor. Focus on the child. Call the police, call for an ambulance, and call the child’s parents. Hospital ER staff are equipped with the protocols of how to collect evidence off of the victim and help the victim to receive mental health support for the trauma. Get the victim medical help ASAP and SVID can meet the victim at the hospital. The the ambulance is slow to arrive, I ditto the PP that voiced let parents drive the student to an ER.

Second, secure the crime scene till the police arrives by having a school security guard sit outside the bathroom and keep students from entering.

All school administrators should practice drills for emergencies such as this. They should know what to do but incidents after incidents catches MCPS staff unprepared.

Beyond the rape itself, the disgusting part of this event is the lack of care for the victim. The Community Engagement Officer wanted to wait till the next day to investigate a rape case. The police needs to answer why rape of a minor doesn’t elicit a quicker response an immediate referral to SVID.

Or it never happens. Privates can determine who is a student and they can expel students. Rapes and shootings are not happening on private school campuses.

The same reason why they told the ambulance that no siren was needed when a kid was shot at Macgruder.

Because MCPS admin aren't police. They are school administrators, and no matter how much training they get, they aren't authorities in crime and risk assessment.

I'm glad they are bringing back CEOs (SRO - a rose by any other name) in some schools, but they need more than just rotating CEOs in some of these schools.

I've been posting about the danger of bathrooms and locker rooms for a while and am happy it's finally gaining traction.

For bathrooms MCPS should, as a PP mentioned, redesign all bathrooms so that there is no outside (hallway) door - on top of being unsafe, they are unnecessary and unsanitary.

The SRO or hall monitors' stations can be near bathrooms.

For locker rooms, the PE teacher, coach, or another authority figure should be present during school and after-school activity hours. and not in an office where they can't see what's going on.
