One has nothing to do with the other. Sacrificing by wearing a mask in solidarity with Ukrainians isn't helping anything. And the message today is that you don't have to "pick a fight" with your school district as the fight is now officially over.

Well, not completely. FCPS is filing an amicus brief with the ACLU lawsuit against the SB 739 that will be heard on 2/28. But by then the CDC could have revised guidelines to make us be in the moderate category anyway - that's all supposed to come out this afternoon.

No, meaning is, it’s is a stupid problem that is really not a problem. Real problems are happening and here we are worrying about masks. But sure, go about your business as usual, it’s not like people dying in Ukraine is a big deal to your every life.

DP. With all due respect, what are my kids going to do differently today, or March 1st, to help Ukraine? Honestly.

Yes, our problems utterly pale in comparison to what's going on over there, to the struggles of Russians protesting the war, but that's also true of famine in Afghanistan (and before that but still continuing and horrific, Yemen), and tons of other tragedies that didn't happen to play out on our TVs because they didn't potentially effect us quite so closely as this one might. What are we, American citizens, practically supposed to do though?

The various fcps newsletters, weekly email from school, SB newsletter, etc has said NOTHING about March 1. There are long wordy paragraphs about XYZ, but nothing about masks post Mar 1.

They're in denial of the inevitable.

It's their passive aggressive 'in denial' approach.

Scroll upthread. It's all there, clear, detailed, and surprisingly pretty sane.

My bad, color me surprised. That's the most detailed, reasonable announcement I've seen from any of the districts.

+1 FCPS must have gotten a lot of backlash in the last few weeks from remaining silent on the March 1 law.

there is no form to opt-out of masks.

They must have known teachers would find that untenable.

I hope the cdc announces something today that will allow teachers to make a choice on masking.

I think masks and Ukraine are unrelated and one thing doesn’t affect the other. I think that is called what aboutism. By all means - you can personally feel free to focus on Ukraine yourself.

I agree. So students get to take off their masks, but the teacher - the one teaching to the students - have to continue speaking through a mask? And weren't FCPS teachers the front of the line for vaccinations last year? Let's give them the option to take off those masks as well!

I feel horrible for the teachers that still have to wear masks. That is really not fair that kids don’t have to, but they still have to.

The justification in PWCS, at least, is the VDH rules that all employers have to follow CDC guidelines for their given occupation. VDH was going to drop those rules (to much democratic outcry about employee safety, might I add), but I believe that's bogged down in a process quagmire. If CDC revised guidelines say people here can unmask, that'll change the ballgame.

I'm not sure how Loudoun is getting away with letting teachers unmask, other than assuming VDH doesn't plan to enforce the rule (which is a good assumption).

Honestly, as a teacher, wearing a mask is the least of my stress on a given day.

My spouse is a teacher who doesn’t want to mask. But spouse is an adult and is able to wait until FCPS says.

Can we as staff just reduce the mask wearing? Walking in and out of school, walking around when no students around? Teacher work day? What the hell? We get no reduction choice?
