Barely controlled dogs at playgrounds

Ask any EMT or ER doc and you'll know how many dogs bite kids and adults every day. Its ludicrous how irresponsible dog owners can be. It should be a criminal offense. Just other day one bit a friend's brother on his penis. Imagine the trauma.

There are such areas. They're called dog parks. People who bring their kids under 12 to dog parks, which generally have posted rules prohibiting that, aren't any better than the dog owner here.

Dog parks for the most part aren't safe for dogs. There are too many lazy owners and aggressive/timid/dogs that don't like other dogs for it to be safe. Owners think all dogs enjoy interacting with strange dogs but that isn't true.

I wouldn't take my dog to playground while kids are playing but, I think it is ok if no one is around.

Do we really have to re-hash this topic over and over?

I do not care if the dog park is safe for your dog. Full stop. It is not my problem. There are things provided for human children and other resources for dogs. It’s not my problem is those resources aren’t to your standards. Should have thought of that before getting a dog!

Yes, clearly we do need to rehash this because you still aren’t getting it. I do not want your dog peeing and pooping in the playground even if no kids are present. Playgrounds are NOT for dogs. Anytime. Period.

I'm not sure what PP doesn't get. She can bring her dog to the park and either (a) keep it on a leash in the "general" part of the park, (b) or let it off its leash in the dog park. However, there's no circumstance where she is allowed to bring the dog into the playground area, and it's bizarre that she would even want to.

Some parents allow their kids to pee and poop in bushes around playground. This is just as disgusting as dogs peeing and pooping in playground.

Maybe. But that still doesn't make it okay for you to bring your dog into the playground.

How is this even a discussion?

You can also teach your children how to behave civilized in all public places instead of their feral behavior encouraged and allowed at home. Public parks are for people of all ages and your screaming kids are incredibly annoying.

“She’s soooo friendly! She likes children! Do they want to pet her?” - people barely holding on to their giant mouth-frothing dog jumping over my terrified toddler.

I get it OP. There is a lunatic on our street who always wants her “spirited” pitbull to sniff my kids and I literally just cross the street now. Dog owners don’t get it, so just avoid them.

SO ridiculously of fun topic but thanks for the giggle!

I have been a nanny for close to 30 years and have never once seen any child poop in the bushes. And maybe once saw a kid pee. Everyone has portable travel potties.

And it’s not as disgusting since dogs have absolutely no reason to be on a playground.

She wrote emails and sent a registered letter to the mayor! She single-handedly got the city to post signs and assign an officer to the park.

It’s a safer and cleaner park and playground now. Please don’t think there is nothing you can do about this dangerous problem.

This! First, your nanny rocks! Second, I wrote several emails this morning based on this comment and will also follow up with a registered letter outlining my emails and calls. Third, thank you for posting!

I also recently took actions to get irresponsible dog owners to stop running their dogs on soccer fields near me. Police enforcement and better signs. There is a dog park right next to these fields. I hear that the dog park is a mud pit, that's why the dog owners don't want to use it and instead play with their dogs on the soccer fields intended for children or adults playing sports. Like guess what? I do not want our soccer field to become a mud pit like the dog park. I think the city spent hundreds of thousands of dollars recently on this field, irrigation and turf etc. I do not understand the entitlement of dog owners. In the city, it is every green space ruined by dogs.

You might be like, it's just my one sweet dog playing frisbee! I pick up his poop! But multiply by 75+ dogs per day. It is not just you and your special dog! I would see entire dog parties on this field, 20 dogs at a time in the morning and after work. That is a field getting raked by dog claws like a gardening tool, constantly. And pee that kills the grass. Repeatedly. All day. That's why the dog park looks like shit. Do not ruin the kids' field too!

This issue has made me against getting a dog, even though I love dogs, and my kids love dogs, and I grew up having dogs. I loathe how dog owners are so thoughtless in the city.
