I don't think having a leader catering to people like this is "fortunate"

Last I checked, Hogan was gov of MD, not VA. Maybe you are in the wrong school forum?

Oh yes. I forgot. Maryland and Montgomery County in particular is a magical land where no crazy Republican's live. We have mystic anti-cra-cra barriers on the boundaries of 485 and 270 to ensure such a thing does not exist here. My bad.

And I apologize to Republicans. It's really the anti-mask, in-person-only school crowd (which includes independent liberal spouses).

F*off. I'm for masks in schools, and we are boosted.

-Independent with liberal spouse

You are a crazy, high anxiety, fear ridden liberal. I can play the mud slinging game, too, just as well as you can, if not better.

No need to get mad at someone on an anonymous board. Calm down.

Is that a mea culpa, PP? I bet it is now that you got called out on your stupidity.

I am mad.. I am mad at high anxiety stupid people who insist on closing down the schools because of their fear. As a PP pointed out, the surge came during break; infection rate is declining. What would be the point of closing schools now?

And again, just because people want kids in school where they learn their best doesn't mean people also don't want everyone to mask up. The fact that some high anxiety stupid liberal can't see that tells me that their anxiety is killing off some of their brain cells. Do we want to listen to people who are half cocked?

Talk about stupid. Schools need adults to operate. If the adults aren't there the schools don't function. Fox may be telling you cases are declining but they are still astronomically high compared to previous year.

You know how many Magruder classrooms had subs in them yesterday? You know about the sub who just walked out during the lockdown?

I regret voting for him. I mistook him for a moderate but these days the GOP has gone way too far to the right.

Yeah, and I regret voting for Biden. I thought he’d bring some sanity to the White House. Instead, he clearly can’t handle the job and so many things are even worse now than they were 2 years ago, with regards to Covid. Crazy inflation, supply chain issues, vaccine mandates, unchecked illegal immigration. All insanity.

I think it’s great that Hogan wants more information out of MCPS regarding how they made this decision. It should be transparent and they should be held accountable. It’s not enough to say “we looked at this list of factors.”

However, if we just don’t have enough staff or bus drivers to keep these schools open, then what solution is Hogan offering so we don’t have to go virtual? The fact that he wants more information about how these decisions were made indicates that he has no idea whether this was necessary.

Yeah, you really need to calm down.

why? I'm passionate about my kids and their ability to learn in person. I guess the pro-vl aren't, except when they start a petition to go virtual, and get everyone and their dog to sign it, and say, "see.. we have 13K people who want virtual".

No. It's 21K now, but I can see why you'd want to say it's a third lower. The other petition was only 1K, which means that less than 5% thought it was a good idea to stay in-person during the surge.

Your poor grammar reveals how little you value education, and how much you would benefit from it.

You also profoundly misread the current political climate. Even very liberal parents like myself are horrified by the closure of schools for so long, and the last thing we want to see is a repeat of this. I am even willing to vote Republican if necessary to see the schools remain open, something I never thought I would say.

The fact is that omicron poses close to zero risk for children, and is not much worse than the flu for everyone else. Closing schools while everything else remains open would be criminally stupid.

On the contrary. I'm not for permanent virtual-learning at all. But I am for temporary virtual learning when school outbreaks occur.

As far as "misreading the current political climate", what I see are a few very angry people dominating the more reasonable majority. It seems as if the in-person crowd had to withdraw their petition? I couldn't find it anymore. Could it be since in-person was only around 1K and the virtual petition was at 20K?
https://www.change.org/p/mcps-board-of-education-we-need-virtual-learning-right-now

Ohhhh, this makes sense...you're crazy petition poster. Just look at the VA Governor election to see how the real world works.

And you, droog, see how the parents of VA are standing up against he Governor now that he's shown his true colors.

The state voted for the Youngkin precisely because he made Educational change his centerpiece issue, but didn't pre-announce what his agenda really was. Now parents realized the mistake and stood up against him.

How are parents standing up? Did you find one of those entirely ineffective, completely idiotic petitions floating around?

Aww, you mean like the clearly idiotic numerous petitions TogetherAgainMCPS had floating around that barely anyone signed?

The vast majority of students have showed up for school since after winter break. Our before and after care was filled. Stop trying to make it seem like families who want in person are a minority. The people who want virtual for everyone are a small and weird minority.

Petitions are not scientific samples designed to draw such a conclusion. Did you ever take any college courses?

This board is really filled with some wackos that just won’t quit. Schools were open during the peak, most student attended, there have been some challenges but things are much closer to normal now as the worst is behind us. Yet there is a group of extremists who continue to push for virtual district wide. MCPS has already said they would allow students who want virtual to request it. You can do so. The thought of listening to you people every winter break is exhausting. Move on.

If you assumed every signer was a unique MCPS student, nearly 90 percent did not sign the virtual petition. Probably there are many signatures from mule people in the same household, teachers, and people without children.

Yup, me too. Another Democrat who won’t vote for Hogan but think he’s making the right call.

The damage is done. Omicron is so infectious you've pretty much all given it to your children. Thank you for your contribution to medical research. I am hoping that with the sharp peak and now the decline in infection rates that will be enough for my child and family to avoid catching it when my child returns to school next week for the first time since Christmas break.

It's not the solution I wanted. It exposed a lot of vulnerable people and I can't even imagine the cost for some of your teachers and staff... But it's the world we live in. A world full of careless sociopaths.

Yes a sociopath society that punished children for almost two years while keeping bars open.

I just follow the math and science. By permitting omicron to rapidly infect a large population, the math is stacked against. The most plausible scenario is a sudden uptick in hospitalization rates that goes undetected (or in denial, such as many on this message are doing), but no one in the medical community bothers to type the infection thinking it was "just Omicron". It's a very plausible scenario, since this has already happened with Deltacron in Cyprus (which is about the size of Montgomery County, 1.2 vs 1 million people)? For the DHHS people in Montgomery County to believe this can't happen here, I'd remind everyone that covid probably started in China, but could also have started somewhere else (and just found a large population to infect there). I still remember when everyone said "oh, there are only four cases.."

"Deltacron infection is higher among patients hospitalized for Covid-19 than among non-hospitalized patients, so that rules out the contamination hypothesis"
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-09/cypriot-scientist-says-covid-19-variant-deltacron-not-an-error

“We will see in the future if this strain is more pathological or more contagious or if it will prevail"
https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/08/cyprus-reportedly-discovers-a-covid-variant-that-combines-omicron-and-delta.html

As long as we continue to listen to politics over science, we will continue to make the same mistakes, over and over and over and over..

Yep. I don't know what you all were thinking, going out to eat, gathering for the holidays this year, or sending your kids to school to get them infected. All I know is you've made the world worse.
