Such a bummer. Wondering were there that many applying from this area? Or, should we worry about a rec?

Seems they cut over 50% this year, took fewer and deferred much fewer. Knocked the wind out of kid's sails a bit. Did not expect an admit, but thought they'd at least get deferred.

It is so tough. This is so exhausting. When my older kid applied, I was shocked to see athletes writing their own tickets. I thought I am mentally stronger this time with my second kid but once again, it stings. Academics, high scores, incredible EC, but at the end, not special enough, that is how my second kid feels, watching his friends getting offers from ivy because they are athletes. It stings bad.

Yup yup yup, the sting especially. In our case, was more likely kids who were legacy or stood out in politics or moreso on an instrument. Sending you some extra mental strength. it's going to be a long RD. Hang in there!

Come on, you misled your kid if they expected anything more than a rejection.

This is NOT a diss on your child, but these schools are EXTREME reaches for ALL applicants.

How did you miss that memo??

Thanks for hitting someone when they're down.

I did not mislead kid, we fully expected that rejection was a possibility, but at this stage of EA, with their strong stats, they seemed likely for at least deferral. I've been watching stats for a long time.

PS. You really don't have to be such a jerk.

Sorry. It is just that for months people have been saying that schools like that are like buying a lottery ticket. I guess my kid and I really faced the stats when she applied. Not saying she did not buy a ticket for a reach, but there was no surprise when the outcome was no. It was not a criticism, just that I can't really relate.

Obviously, you kid is a superstar (I mean that sincerely) and will do very well.

Thanks. Appreciate it. They would have applied to a different school that was less of a gamble, but everything they liked was ED, which we can't do. Then, in the meantime, they got the interview, and it went really well, and they had a decent nat'l award and got hopeful of at least deferral. Ah well. They just work so hard, I really wanted something that wasn't such a buzzkill, but they'll survive.

Same for my kid. High stat for everything. Magnet. Asian-American male. Wanted CS. Full Pay.

But, I am thinking that perhaps this may turn out a blessing in disguise because he has also applied to state schools and quite possibly will get into one. A kid with this kind of stat going to even a lower rated school remains the same kid. If he can save 300K in college cost then that is an immense leg up for him. As for the CS bit? He will still do the CS easily but will need to be creative in how he gets his first job and what he learns by himself. That should not be a problem for him because he is really a genius in CS. Yes, it will be a long RD road and the next 15 days are going to be awful because he will be back at the drawing table. But, que sera sera. Till date, every adversity has been a blessing in disguise. We are the luckiest family and so this will be no different from before.

I'm not an expert on this, but it seems like going to these uber elite schools matters very little for most kids in terms of their professional trajectories. To the extent it does, it's for a few niche programs and a handful of specific careers (academia)....but I'm guessing for STEM and CS, going to a school like Yale is really no better than going to a strong state school....

The resilience on display is impressive.

Public school, right?

Yeah. Not legacy either. We're just boring middle class.

Yea. Nobody in public gets into Yale without a hook.

Two kids from DC’s public school accepted by Yale last year are sjw. If anyone wants their kids to apply yale but no hook, encouraging them to right and become an activist.

You're old fashioned if you think Yale is looking for sjws. SJWs are a dime a dozen.

DD’s best friend was accepted. 1600/3.99 unweighted/14 AP classes from our public school in California. Not a legacy, first generation or minority and full need based scholarship. Amazing young woman. She is waiting on MIT - Yale is not her first choice!

Op, my DC went through it a few years ago. It stung! It does work out though. DC ended up at a school that is a great fit and is very happy and not looking back. Best of luck to your DD.

Very odd to not use her SCEA on MIT if that is her first choice. Why would she not have done that?

Is it really true? It doesn’t seem so for TJHSST kids.

What do you mean? They admit a ton from TJ every year.

MIT will be out on Saturday. She better not have applied early to both Yale and MIT. That’s wrong.

No. You can't do that. She must have applied regular decision to MIT.

It they take like 2-3 students from a small private school every year and 4-7 from TJ, I don’t think the percentage works out. Also, these TJ kids work so hard, I dare to say average TJ kids work harder than many top students at base schools.
