How about we don't talk about Bruno? |
So the grandmother with her newborn triplets running away from their home and seeing her husband die horribly wasn't tragic???? You have a cold stone for a heart my friend. |
| I don't think I found the cultural aspects of the family charming. The control freak grandmother was an undermining a-hole. I guess lots of people can relate to a matriarch like that but she annoyed the hell out of my family when we watched. |
Maybe it’s normal in some cultures. |
| Surface Pressure is so relatable and therapeutic for me. |
+1 I cried during that scene. The song was so hauntingly beautiful that it made the whole scene so sad. |
Same for us, too! |
Well, that was a cultural aspect only insofar as generational trauma has occurred to some cultures more than others. The point was that she was an undermining a-hole and Mirabel was the only one who could see it. She was fundamentally a loving but damaged person, and Mirabel was the one to realize that their entire family was built on a shaky foundation because of Abuela’s trauma. By the end Abuela has had insight into why she’s been such an a-hole, and is trying to do better. I think she’s an interesting character. When the candle provides the miracle, everyone else is safe and happy but she is still heartbroken and grieving. The art for that part is so affecting, she looks almost gray with grief. She’s the only one with a ”door” who also doesn’t have any powers The miracle has accrued to the rest of her family but not her. At the end she realizes that the miracle is her family’s survival, not their magic, and so she’s part of it too. |
I think you missed the whole point of the movie… |
| I love the music, the visuals, the intraracial diversity, and I would watch it again for those reasons. I thought the storyline was pretty lame. Not enough of a plot. |
Where did you see this? |
+1 Interesting topic but not a winner movie overall. Should have been after-school special. Music was meh. I had high expectations for LMM after Moana. |
NP. I also loved the body diversity, especially among the females. There was the strong one with muscles, Mirabel looked like a normal 15 year old girl, the moms looked like moms, even the “pretty” sister didn’t fall into the stereotypical Disney beauty with a button nose, impossibly thin waist, and giant boobs. I was especially happy over the strong one - I lift and DD likes to exercise along with me, so it’s nice to show that women can be physically strong and still be valued and feminine. |
I loved all of these aspects. Better plot and music would have made me want to watch it more than once. |
It is on Disney+ We watched on Christmas Day. Perfect afternoon movie after the morning excitement. |
